Teixeira looks dreadful at the plate. Is he cooked?

Jason Collette: Aprils have never been a good month for him, but as long as he’s complaining about that wrist, things won’t be good for him. His history buys him some leash, but early results have not been encouraging.

Jason! Thanks for the chat, was getting concerned. Thoughts on Corey Dickerson? Does his talent push him above Blackmon by late April?

Jason Collette: Yes, I think the talent wins out here. Someone has to stand out from the crowd here eventually.

Who is a better offensive player right now: Jean Segura or Brad Miller?

Jason Collette: Two of my favorite players to watch. I’m biased with Miller as he’s from Orlando, so I’ve watched him quite a bit. I love his motor.

Please tell me I am dreaming. Lucas Duda over Ike Davis? There is nothing that Duda does better than Davis. Even saber-knowledgable Sandy Alderson idolaters must be going insane. Can this team get any worse?

Jason Collette: When you have three first basemen, you really have no first basemen. Still, they’re in a better position than Milwaukee or Pittsburgh at the moment at the position. Can the Mets get worse? Are you double-dog daring them to?

12:47
Comment From Old School
Thoughts on the Kipnis extension?

Jason Collette: Big fan of it. I was discussing an extension with some others last month when the Carpenter one came out and we postulated a Kipnis extension (rumored to be in the works at the time) would be 5/40 with 1 or 2 extensions so we were pretty close on the money.

Yangervis Solarte. What do we make of him ROS?

If the Mariners stay healthy do they have a shot at making the playoffs with their current roster plus Iwakuma and Taijuan Walker?

Jason Collette: A slim chance – I still don’t like the overall team defense, especially the outfield. That division is going to be a dogfight.

Comment From the Average Sports Fan
Have you seen anything from the new managers that really has caught your attention?

Jason Collette: Brad Ausmus giving everyone green lights in spring training and showing a willingness to utilize the running game rather than waiting for the boppers to hit homers.

Which oft-injured starter is a better shot as a last round flier, Dustin McGowan or Felipe Paulino?

Jason Collette: Paulino – love the stuff he flashes when he is healthy.

I watched all 3 Astros games so far. While still not good, they seem better. Could promotions and current talent get them to 70-75 wins?

Jason Collette: I will be surprised if this team loses 100 games this season. There is more bullpen depth this year, which blew a ton of games for them last season, and the rotation has more depth. If they win 70 games, they need to break out victory cigars and celebrate the success.

The AL wins leader is relief pitcher Cody Allen. Just throwing that out there as an interesting random fact.

How many runs will the Yankees infield defense cost them?

Jason Collette: It’s not going to be pretty. The left side of Johnson and Jeter is going to be tough to watch. Johnson can make the throws, but the range is a tick or two off.

12:53
Comment From Zach
What do you think about Braun ROS after the news of the thumb nerve issue popping up again?

Jason Collette: Pessimistic. It was a problem in the past for him and there is no guarantee that is going to get better. It puts a big dent in my playoff prediction for them.

12:54
Comment From Shawn
Looks like its not Qualls as closer in Houston. Fields or Crain?

Jason Collette: It’s still a committee for the most part. Crain is no closer to returning to the mound now than he was two weeks ago. Qualls was given the heart of the Yankee lineup in the high leverage 8th inning on opening day and Fields finished off game 2.

Woke up to 10 inches of snow this morning here in Minny. Wife is from central FLA. The argument against moving to FLA is getting weaker every year.

Hey Jason, what do you think about dealing Gausman for Rosenthal in a 5×5 keeper? One of Gausman’s possible ceilings is Rosenthal, an elite reliever, and I need help in my bullpen right now. I have lots of starters, although tough to trade away any potential ace. Thoughts?

Jason Collette: Play for the present – pull the trigger

Billy Hamilton has looked awful so far. I am not ready to give up on him yet, how long will Reds give him to figure this out? What are their options if they have to move on, even short term?

Jason Collette: You would look awful too if you faced Wainwright, Wacha, and Lynn. The Reds really don’t have a solid fallback plan so Hamilton will get plenty of time to fail, or succeed.

Groin problem the culprit for Bailey’s poor showing yesterday?

Jason Collette: Probably the pressure I put on him to win the Cy Young. I’ll take the blame for that. In all seriousness, the groin issue probably did not help.

Thoughts of Jose Abreu so far? his power looks like it will be off the charts

Will AT&T park put a damper on Belt’s power surge?

Jason Collette: His career SLG% is higher at home than it is on the road, because some of those road homers become home doubles.

Comment From Bert
How do you feel about Veras closing? I know it’s so early, but even before the season I think many viewed Strop as the better option. Thoughts on that situation? Thanks.

Jason Collette: The Cubs would ultimately like to build up Veras’s value to deal him at the deadline, as Houston did last season. The Cubs did not deal Gregg last year at the deadline, despite the saves, because other teams realized he was still Kevin Gregg. Veras should be able to bring in a return in July and Strop can take over.

12-team 5×5 redraft, I got Ramos’ed. D’Arnaud, Mesoraco (when he is back), Navarro, Castillo, someone else? It is really thin unfortunately. Also, do I do everything I can to trade for a catcher, or make do with one of those? Thanks!

Jason Collette: Castillo is where I would go.

thoughts on replay in the very early going?

Jason Collette: Love replay, hate the implementation of it. Implement the NCAA football rules and end this madness of managers slow-rolling out to the ump while watching for the dugout to give them the thumbs up/down. These review guys for each team need to make quicker decisions on what to challenge and what to let go.

1:06
Comment From Bert
If Gausman is called up this weekend, will he stay? Why were they keeping him down in the first place? Thanks.

Jason Collette: All signs point to a one and done situation for him this weekend. He was sent down to work as a starter so he would be ready when someone gets hurt or becomes too ineffective rather than trying to stretch him out from the bullpen.

1:07
Comment From Depresssed Braun Owner

Hi Jason, I currently have Brad Miller, Segura and soon to be SS eligible Xander Bogaerts. Should I keep the SS depth or try to move one of them? Which one should I move if that’s the case? Thanks.

Jason Collette: Keep it, since you can play Bogaerts at 3B.

Brutal news about Braun. Can’t be as bad as last year after sitting out 65 games and an entire offseason correct?

Jason Collette: Playing at 65% would be bad considering he was drafted in the first round just about everywhere I looked. 1st rounders performing like 10th rounders is bad.

Thoughts on Odorizzi’s start tonight?

Jason Collette: Watch to see how he uses the new split-changeup. Texas lineup has the lefties and is a lineup that makes a lot of contact. For all of the teams with 3 games played this season, Texas has the lowest strikeout rate. They were also a very high contact teams last season. Odorizzi has had his issues against lefties in the past which is why that new changeup is key. He has to get ahead and have the confidence to throw it while ahead AND behind in the count.

Can I get away with using Moustakas as my primary 3B in a 14 team league?

If a world where the Rays lose a heartbreaking world series do they say screw it and bring Price back for his final season and only get his comp pick in return?

Jason Collette: Why not? The difference in what they would get in a trade one year out of FA while losing the pick vs what they would get with the pick (assuming he signs with a non-protected team) may not be that far apart. The risk they run is that he follows his buddy Derek Johnson to the Cubs and signs there. The Cubs certainly need the pitching

How do you see the Milwaukee closer situation playing out? It sucks having to roster both Henderson and K-Rod

stick a fork in bj upton yet?

Jason Collette: It does not look good so far. The outcome is not from a lack of effort as he worked hard in the offseason with the hitting coaches, but that Milwaukee series looked like an extension of last season.

What do you look for in early-season SPs that might have staying power even in shallow leagues? I’m trying to decide which of Paxton, Erasmo, Eovaldi, M Perez warrant pickup for breakout potential. Maybe rank ’em?

Jason Collette: Fastball command, willingness to throw non-fastballs in hitter counts, and utilization of changeups or superior breaking balls in lieu of changeups.

1:16
Comment From Homer Bailey
Based on your love, I overpaid for Bailey in my 5×5 auction… I know you see him having Cy Young ceiling, but where do you see as a safe midline projection? In the Latos/Zimmermann range?

If Jim Johnson continues to struggle, is Ryan Cook a good handcuff when he returns next week?

Is it worth it for me to use one of three bench spots on Javier Baez? Not a keeper league.

CC or Dickey?

Jason Collette: Dickey. He was hitting 78 with the knuckler on opening day, but a tight low strike zone got to him. I did not like what I saw from CC on opening day, even after he settled down in the final half of the outing.

I don’t give any credence or care to Spring Training stats, so the following question is based simply on curiosity. What do you attribute to someone like David Ortiz getting 2 hits in 40 Spring Training at-bats, yet 5 hits in the first three regular season games? Is he even trying to hit the ball in the spring, or just swinging away for fun? Thanks!

Jason Collette: Working on things, games don’t mean anything…a variety of factors. Veterans know to pace themselves. Look at how hard Garza was lit up this spring, and then opens the season with 6 no-hit innings.

How much money would the braves have to swallow to trade bj upton after this season if he continues to have a season like last year?

1:23
Comment From Gabe
What’s a reasonable player to expect in return for Tanaka in a dynasty league?

Jason Collette: Nothing, right now. People are going to want to see what he does first before trading for him. Right now, it is all on speculation based off spring numbers (useless) so you’re not going to get anything of fair value

What would cause a sudden drop in bat speed for BJ Upton (who appears to be healthy and should be within the prime years of his career)?

12-team 5×5 redraft, as I said earlier, I got Ramos’ed and have him in my one DL slot, do I drop Nate Jones or let him take a bench spot for a bit? Tough..

Jason Collette: Even when Ramos comes back, the hamate issue all but guarantees he’ll struggle to hit for power when he does return. Cut bait in a redraft league of that depth.

You seem to like the Gomes extension. I sorta, kinda, semi like Alex Avila. Would that same extension be a good one for him?

Jason Collette: Avila is already on a semi-extension as he has a $5.4M team option next season that vests if he makes the all-star team this season. He only has one more arb year after that before FA so a new extension seems unlikely

Should I drop Viciedo for Semien? Feels like Viciedo is ton the wrong end of the platoon. I’m in a deep AL only league, so if Viciedo comes back and pops 25 homers, that will probably be my season right there, haha

Is paxton for real? His fastball command was crazy with the sustained velocity. 12 tm league viable? Dare I say 10 tm? I think I trust him more than eovaldi. Paxton has much better secondary stuff not including his new cutter.

Jason Collette: It is one game, but that was very encouraging. Repeating his delivery has been an issue in the past, but the starter vs reliever debate with him seems more one-sided now than it was 18 to 24 months ago.

At what point is the BJ Upton contract a sunk cost, and other options are explored? Does his brother being on the team play any factor?

Would the White Sox still bother platooning Alejandro De Aza?

Jason Collette: They have to if they either want to keep Viciedo fresh or build up his trade value. Can’t trade a guy you have buried on the bench .

Schoop starting at third today. If Hardy walks next year, and Machado slides to short, does Schoop have the skills to stick there long term?

Jason Collette: He has the skills to stick at any of the three infield positions, IMO

Rafael Montero an underated pitcher in keeper leagues?

Jason Collette: He has a 3rd starter ceiling for me.

What is Carlos Correa’s ETA?

Jason Collette: Late 2015. He’s going to put up massive numbers in Lancaster this season and finish the year in Double-A Corpus Christi.

Am I a platoon player? How many at bats do I get?

Jason Collette: You should be the everyday guy at some point this season.

Will you trade Billy Hamilton for Emilio Bonifacio?

Jason Collette: Yes, if I were high on PCP

Did you see the ridiculous umpiring in the Mariners A’s game last night? If not, go look at the Pitch FX data. It’s ridiculous.

Jason Collette: Robot Umps, now. That f/x data on that zone was horrendous. Errors in and out of the zone, and many of them egregious. Even Eric Gregg was laughing at some of those.

What team totally imploding this season would be the most interesting?

Jason Collette: Yankees, always the Yankees.

Regarding bat speed, is there any site that keeps track of that?

Archie Bradley will be up no earlier than June?

Jason Collette: I don’t think Arizona will run the risk of him getting an extra year of arb by rushing him unless they get him to commit to a pre-arb deal.

Comment From Mariner Moose
Abraham Almonte -where did he come from? Just wondering why he wasn’t higher on prospect lists.

Jason Collette: The Yankees in the Ichiro deal. He was an alcoholic who needed rehab to get back on track

Are you a believer in Marcus Stroman?

Jason Collette: I am. I really liked what I saw from him in the AFL and some of that flashed in the Grapefruit League. He gets in trouble when he doesn’t stay on top of his pitches and elevates. If he can consistently locate down in the zone, he’ll do a lot of good.

Will Ordorizzi break out the splitter tonight?

Addisson Russell, Sano, Polanco, Profar. In a keepers league, please rank them from most valuable to least.

As good as Abreu looks, try to remember he was facing the Twins pitching staff. That rotation is going to be brutal once again this year.

Jason Collette: He gets that pitching staff 15-16 more times this season

Which Lefty do you like most for this year in fantasy: CJ WIlson, Gio, Cole Hammels, Gerrit Cole and Cliff Lee? … maybe go ahead and rank them

Jason Collette: I hate Gerrit Cole as a lefty pitcher

I heard Josh Hamilton switched to a new type of big league chew this season. Bounce back year or was that 2nd half just a tease?

Jason Collette: Hopefully it is the gum and not that other nasty stuff. Hopefull it helps him lay off the breaking balls out of the zone

Am I wrong to think dj peterson is in the same league as clint frazier and kris bryant long-term?

Jason Collette: He’s going to be good, but I wouldn’t lump him with Bryant.

What do you think the chances of us getting a team are up here in PDX? I think it’s pretty slim, given the difficulties in ballpark funding and fanbase. You ever been to Portland? 25 craft brews is standard at the kwik-E-mart.

Jason Collette: I love Portland – been there twice. I think expansion is the best option, but not sure the league will expand. I’d love to see Portland and Charlotte get teams, but not at the expense of Oakland and Tampa Bay losing them.

Would you advise cutting losses on Braun and try to trade him?

Jason Collette: If you trade him now, you’re getting 50 cents on the dollar with the news. Ride it out

A “jumper” somehow dropped Aoki and I dropped Chris Carter for him. Sad to see the power go, but I should be very happy, no?

Jason Collette: Yea, you should be. You’re sitting on potentially 80-90 runs and 25+ steals at the top of the lineup. I love Carter, but I do that move myself.

Comment From Plucky
Wait, you think Appel pitches in the show in August? You think Foltyneiwicz, White, Wojciechowski get looks first and fizzle, or that the Astros leapfrog them with Appel? or that the existing rotation collapses and all are up?

Jason Collette: I think Appel gets a taste of the big leagues this season the year after he was drafted much like Price did, albeit in different circumstances because the Astros won’t be competing for a playoff spot.

I saw a report that Billingsley might be back with the Dodgers in May (maybe even early May). They have a lot of pitching depth, would he be a bullpen guy or rotation when he’s back?

Jason Collette: Seems like the bullpen, as by the time he’s back, so is Kershaw and Beckett to go with Greinke, Haren, and Ryu (who has looked fantastic)

Have Bonifacio and Peralta for possible MI slot in 14 team 5×5 mixer…Drop Peralta for Willingham or Arcia?

Jason Collette: No. There’s a reason the Fantasy Focus has had the “Bonafide or Bonifacio” segment for so many years.

Comment From Mikey
Mookie Betts thoughts? Will he get moved to a different position or a different team?

Jason Collette: Different team seems more likely but the reports from AFL folks I chatted with were absolutely glowing. A few considered Betts the absolute best player out there this year.

Building on Derky Turkey’s question, where would Oswaldo Arcia fall in that young outfielder ranking? (Calhoun, Davis, Yelich, Garcia)

I’m in a 2C league. I lost Ramos and not confident in him having a speedy recovery. Any deeper catchers you have faith in this yr? (d’Arnaud, Flowers, Arencibia, Jaso/Norris type guys avail)

RE: Minnesota; Best spot in the country during July. Worst spot in Jan. Most underrated restaurants in the US too!

Springer would be up for the Astros had he accepted that deal, not because has stuff to work on, right?

Jason Collette: Yea, if he had taken the deal, no reason to keep him on the farm. Since he didn’t put him down, stall the clock. It’s smart business.

All things created equal (draft round value, etc) as a team that lost ramos at catcher, would you deal yordano for jason castro? feels fair as fair gets no?

Jason Collette: Yea, that’s a fair get for me. I’m in the minority, but I have my concerns with Ventura due to the delivery.

Dynasty League: I’m in rebuild mode. I traded Tulo and J Zimmermann for Archie Bradley, Miguel Sano and future draft picks. Did I get enough value in return?

Jason Collette: You did not, sorry. You should have been able to get something of present day value along with that instead of the draft pick

Ignore this question if already asked. I was just offered Braun for CarGo. Is Braun’s numb thumb concerning enough to ignore my offer? Thanks.

Jonathan Niese have any value in a 14 team league? even worth rostering? only start vs “weak” teams?
