Leaderboards Feature: Multiple Seasons

On the leaderboards you can now filter by multiple seasons going all the way back to 1871.

There are a couple caveats, in that some sections of the leaderboard only go back so far. The Batted Ball, Pitch Type, Pitch Value and Plate Discipline sections can only go back to 2002, and the Win Probability section only goes back to 1974. Splits will also only go back to 2002 and monthly splits currently only for single seasons right now. I’ve included a label which shows exactly which seasons you’re looking at, even if you’ve selected something else.

For instance, if you’ve selected dates between 1980 and 2004 and you go the the Batted Ball section, you’ll only see the dates between 2002 and 2004.

If you’re filtering huge date ranges, please be a little more patient than usual because it may take a few seconds more to grab all the data.

This feature will be making its way to the other sortable stats sections fairly soon.

    David-

This is awesome. I have been poking around with pitch values and “pitching luck” metrics, and having the ability to look across multiple years will really add another element without a ton of extra legwork.

    Thanks!

Ahhh no more playing around with the “past x calender years” splits. Sweet addition. Thanks so much for making this site so damn amazing.

    Very nice.

Next, could you please flip the sorting feature on the leaderboards so that it shows the leaders (rather than the trailers) when you first click on a stat?

For example, if you go to the leaderboards and click wRC+, it will sort the list in ascending order. You have to click again to get the descending order, which I imagine is what most people are looking for with that first click.

    Thanks.

Yes, at the risk of sounding ungrateful, the “ascending order” bug is the only thing I dislike about your site at all.

Otherwise, you guys are above and beyond every other resource on the internet, although BR and Cot’s are having a thrilling battle for 2nd place in my brain right now, with nunchucks and axes and maces and everything. It’s pretty brutal.

Does SABR give award for service to the baseball-loving community? Dave Appleman deserves one. I’m not a SABR member, but I hope someone who reads this is an nominates Dave. He deserves it. This site is just too amazing.

Could you change the minimum PA feature for the leader boards? Right now the max is 500 PA, but I can imagine myself wanting to know the highest K/9 starting pitchers since 1980 and feeling like Strasburg can’t get on that list yet. Maybe multiples of 100 instead of 10?

  10. David,

Thanks for the new feature. Any chance you could poke your head into the forums and let us know what’s going on with the community blog?
