Leaderboards of Pleasure – 8/15/11

Yonder Alonso helps Tony Campana ascend the NERD leaderboards.

Departing slightly from previous iterations of this column, in this week’s edition of Leaderboards of Pleasure we make sure to cast a gaze at the complete laggardboards, as well, for each of our totally proprietary and widely beloved stats.

Doing so, we learn that:

• Your irrational distaste for Jeff Mathis is also probably a rational distaste for Jeff Mathis.

• The Phillies have two players (Ryan Howard, Raul Ibanez) benefiting considerably from two other players (Chase Utley, Shane Victorino).

Adam Dunn, while generally hilarious, might consider taking a break-ski.

• The author’s irrational taste for the Endy Chavez continues to be a rational taste for the Endy Chavez.

• Having just crossed the 100-plate appearance threshold, Tony Campana appears to be among the league’s most entertaining players so far. Is he too scrappy?

Team NERD Leaderboard
Like the NERD scores you’ll find below, this one represents an attempt to anticipate the “watchability” of each team. The first iteration appears in a heartfelt love letter to America, which anyone is free to read here.

Please note that the “POFF” numbers (playoff-odds adjustments) are not included in the Team NERD scores you see below, but are instead the bonuses/penalties applied to the Game Scores for each respective team — a thing about which you can learn more by reading here.

Can it be considered ironic that the “Leaderboards of Pleasure” have never brought me any pleasure? (A’s fan)

  2. WSO says:

It does not seem that the laggardboard factors in ‘grim fascination’ with regards to watching Adam Dunn.

Do passerby not slow to catch a glimpse of an 18-car pileup? Perhaps the sabermetrically-inclined viewer is apart from the typical American, and thus does not enjoy images of carnage.

Clearly there’s a flaw in NERD scores when Justin Upton isn’t currently an 11.

Nigel Tufnel: The numbers all go to eleven. Look, right across the board, eleven, eleven, eleven and…
Marty DiBergi: Oh, I see. And most NERD boards go up to ten?
      Nigel Tufnel: Exactly.
Marty DiBergi: Does that mean it’s NERDier? Is it any NERDier?
Nigel Tufnel: Well, it’s one NERDier, isn’t it? It’s not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You’re on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you’re on ten on the NERD Board. Where can you go from there if you’re Justin Upton? Where?
      Marty DiBergi: I don’t know.
Nigel Tufnel: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do?
Marty DiBergi: Put it up to eleven.
Nigel Tufnel: Eleven. Exactly. One NERDier.
Marty DiBergi: Why don’t you just make ten NERDier and make ten be the top number and make that a little NERDier?
Nigel Tufnel: [pause] These go to eleven.

Vlad swings at pitches that no one else would ever think about swinging it, and sometimes hits them (interesting to watch).

Kevin Gregg has sweet head-goggles, could implode at any moment, and was almost decapitated by David Ortiz’s left hook (again, interesting to watch).

These just barely kept them off the laggard boards.

  7. Dwezilwoffa says:

I have a specific question on the age ratings. I understand it bonuses on youth, but I feel there should be a bonus for pitchers over 40. I still thoroughly enjoyed watching Nolan Ryan pitch after his 40th bday, among others. Also with age brings increased hairyness, so better chance for facial hair. Anyone with me?
