Devised originally in response to a challenge issued by viscount of the internet Rob Neyer, and expanded at the request of nobody, NERD scores represent an attempt to summarize in one number (and on a scale of 0-10) the likely aesthetic appeal or watchability, for the learned fan, of a player or team or game. Stroman vs. Tanaka in Yankee Stadium is pretty much as good as it gets, says the Torontonian. Both starting pitchers are young and unflappable, so that we oldsters can get into a flap watching them.

I’m going to march into my local (English) bar at lunch and say, “Will you please turn off this commie-euro-sport and put on the SD-SEA American baseball game; Roenis Elias has a 5 NERD score for goshshakes. And when Chase Headley dives, it’s actually part of the game”.

      Wish me luck.
