FanGraphs Library Update
Thanks to all your suggestions earlier this off-season, the FanGraphs Library has now been re-edited and rejuvinated in preparation for the 2012 season. Every stats page has been updated with new context tables — they are not year-specific anymore – and each page has been beefed up with more detailed and accurate information.
– Curious about what the formulas are for xFIP, wRAA, or SIERA? We have those, and many more.
–Â Wondering what the wOBA weights were for 1990, or maybe 1945? Or even 1900? Got it.
–Â Where can you find historical FIP constant values? We have those too.
– Need to find the league-average ISO back in 1956? Or league-average HR/FB rate in 2002? You can find links to historical, league-average leaderboards on every statistics page.
– Need a handy context chart for a specific stat that you can copy and paste into a blog article? The new context charts are easy to highlight and copy/paste from setting to setting.
There are more changes planned for the coming months — additions this time, not just edits — so stay tuned.
Those context tables are brilliant and useful. Very, very nice. So much for me getting any work done this afternoon. ;) Thanks!!!
No problem, thanks! Hopefully this is a win-win…the context charts are applicable to all sorts of situations, and it keeps me from having to redo them every year.
Do you have any of Carson’s stats in there? I was curious about the NERD and SCOUT formulas he uses.
Ahh, very good call. Our next round of updates involves adding new pages to the Library, so I’ll be sure to add those to our list. Those definitely deserve to be in there.
Could you guys do an update of the “Background to WAR” series? Cameron calculates Felix’s 2008 WAR as 3.8, but his player page says 3.7…
That fraction of a run is driving you nuts, huh?
When I’m trying to understand how the stat is calculated, yes.
There’s an issue on the wRC+ page with a chart that is labeled wRC+ and I think should be just wRC.
Do you have batting average and slugging percentage yet?
Definitely old school
How long is Howard Bender going to continue to be allowed to write for this website? The man has made some extremely insensitive jokes in the last few days about a DEAD MAJOR LEAGUE PLAYER.
I absolutely refuse to support anything to do with this site until he is removed from the staff or apologizes publicly for his comments.
There is NO excuse for what he said. NONE.
That comment was from “Howard’s Bender”. A troll. Relax.
I think the chart on the wRC/wRC+ page is incorrect. It has 60 as the league average wRC+ and I believe it should be 100, right?
Hmm, this seems to be causing confusion. The context chart is for wRC, not wRC+….hence why the average is around 60. That was mislabeled…sorry.
