Nicholas Minnix Baseball Chat – 8/8/14

11:44
Nicholas Minnix: Hello, folks! Fire away, and I’ll be with you at the top of the hour.

12:00
Comment From Jolly Roger
In the second year of a rebuild (dynasty) with good depth and potential if not production at every position, but I’m looking to concentrate value a bit more. Thinking of offering Belt, Arenado, and Gio Gonzalez for Rizzo. Other guy has Chris Johnson and Chisenhall at 3B, and his pitching staff is Samardzija and a bunch of OK to good prospects. Sound like a fair deal?

12:01
Nicholas Minnix: Sounds like a fair OFFER, sure. I’d like to come up with Rizzo at 1B in a keeper/dynasty if I could.

12:01
Comment From Jack
Would you drop Maikel Franco for Jake Lamb in a dynasty league? Who has the brighter future? Thanks!

12:02
Nicholas Minnix: No, I like Franco’s upside more. May be a tad likelier to hit his, too, although both are risky prospects, even relatively speaking.

12:02
Comment From Dr. Met
TGIF!

12:02
Nicholas Minnix: Yessir.

12:02
Comment From Sandy
In a redraft league, Javier Baez’s trade value will never be higher this season than it is right now, correct?

12:03
Nicholas Minnix: Not if he hits his ceiling. But if you shop him, then you may very well find that his value is higher than it should be, so it’s not a bad idea at all.

12:03
Comment From Patrick
Thanks for chatting. Is Kennys Vargas worth picking up in a 12-team dynasty? Any thoughts on floor/ceiling?

12:04
Nicholas Minnix: I think he is, if you have something to drop. He’s a curious player, certainly has more ability to hit than I gave him credit for. Question will be his position, I suppose, except that DH eliminates that question, perhaps. Power potential, maybe even a little average, exposure will tell us more, though, some definite unknowns about him.

12:05
Comment From Zeke
Have Maikel Franco, D.J. Peterson, Jesse Winker, and David Dahl stashed. Anyone among those that will make an impact in 2015?

12:06
Nicholas Minnix: Impact in 2015? That’s incredibly ambitious. A few seem likely to debut … Franco I think has the best chance to make an impact, but it’s not a real high probability.

12:07
Comment From Michael
Jordy Mercer, what would it take (Money/years) to extend him? with Hanson moving to second, there really isn’t a SS prospect above A ball.

12:07
Nicholas Minnix: It shouldn’t take much. He provides no real offensive value. Could be something they do, sure.

12:07
Comment From Mick Ninnix
Watched Carpenter morph from valuable 2B to meh 3B this year, and I’m concerned that the same thing happens to Rendon next year. Is his future at 3B, and if so, is he good enough to still be top 5?

12:09
Nicholas Minnix: It is at 3B, likely, given Washington’s team dynamics. But he has a MUCH better chance to be an offensive force at 3B still. Very good hitter, young, a bit more power growth likely. Top 5 is possible in a given year, sure. MAYBE perennial, too.

12:09
Comment From Jack
Would you drop Smyly for either Holland or Shoemaker in a 12-team dynasty league? Looking for value next year more than immediate help. Thanks.

12:10
Nicholas Minnix: No, I’d stick with Smyly. Shoemaker is the one of the two who’d interest me, but Smyly’s future still overall a bit brighter, I think, especially interested to see what TB might do with him.

12:10
Comment From Stephen
Miguel Montero. So cold right now and no more Goldy. Add JPA? D’Arnaud? Jaso? Ramos? AGHHHHH

12:11
Nicholas Minnix: Haha, man. Well, I wouldn’t do it for Arencibia, who seems likely to tank it eventually. Jaso is the most reliable option you listed, has given good fantasy “value,” so if I did it, it’d be for him. Ramos I’d keep an eye on. I like d’Arnaud, but not quite yet. Montero is still a pretty good hitter.

12:11
Comment From Matt L.
What does Medica have to do to take Yonder’s spot permanently? Thanks.

12:13
Nicholas Minnix: Hit RHPs a little consistently. He’s kind of on his way. Still have some doubt, but split indicators vs. RHPs really aren’t a ton worse than those vs. LHPs. Needs to hit them with a bit more power, though, that’s to me a telltale sign. If he’s become disciplined enough to start doing that more regularly. …

12:14
Comment From Clownfeet
Do you think D.J. Peterson gets a shot at 1B with the Mariners next year?

12:14
Nicholas Minnix: Perhaps in the summer, at the ASB give or take, I could see that.

12:15
Comment From Guest
who do you find to have the most value down the stretch in a 10 team redraft league? Im chasing average and steals…. Cuddyer, Pollack, JD martinez, Pagan? I want to Ditch one.

12:16
Nicholas Minnix: I’m a little confused. You want to know who has most value, but you want to drop just one? I think Pagan is your best option, overall, in terms of reliability and some SBs. I don’t trust Cuddyer to contribute much ROS. Martinez could get hot again, hard to say with him. Pollock is a wild card, nice upside, not as reliable as Pagan in OF>

12:16
Comment From Stephen
I’ve got Teheran, J Zimmerman, Bumgarner, Cobb, Arrieta, and Price in a 12-team standard 5×5. Who gets me the best improvment at 3B without derailing my SPs?

12:17
Nicholas Minnix: Ask your league. Price, Teheran and Bum are your best guys. It totally depends on which of your league mates is willing to deal a 3B and who they have to deal.

12:17
Comment From Geoffrey
BA ranked Souza as the best power, speed, and OF arm in the International league. What kind of future do you see for him in Washington, and how soon? Thanks!

12:19
Nicholas Minnix: He’s been old for his levels. I think the upside is a 4th OF who can start for long stretches in the event of an injury and provide nice run. He’s a short-side platoon guy, I expect, but could play more often than that, has a small chance to exceed that projection, I think.

12:20
Nicholas Minnix: He has a lot of swing and miss, took him a long time to figure out minors, has a lot of adjustment to make. He could get off to a hot start in MLB and fool us for a bit. Keep in mind there’s some hollow beneath that floor if he does.

12:21
Comment From Cornhole
Which SP prospect would you stash for some innings in 2015: Zimmer, Severino, Crick, or Wisler? Thanks Nick.

12:22
Nicholas Minnix: I like Wisler most, for 2015. It’s a safe pick, mind you. It’s hard to see what the development paths are for the others, pretty confident Wisler can get an extended look next season, assuming no bumps in health road.

12:22
Comment From Jolly Roger
Looking toward next year, do you see any future aces among Gausman, Hahn, Salazar, Smyly, Alex Wood, and Alex Meyer? Thanks.

12:23
Nicholas Minnix: Aces? Hmmm. Hahn is so interesting, so he’s a possibility, lovely stuff and mix. Smyly I’m partial to, biased, so MAYBE him, but I’m biased! Wood can put up ace-like numbers for long stretches. Meyer will hit bumps, not next year, if that’s what you’re asking.

12:24
Comment From Patrick
With Baez seemingly taking over at 2B, do you think Alcantara will have enough value as an OF to hold on to him in a 12-team dynasty league?

12:24
Nicholas Minnix: Sure, I think, for now, yes. I’d like to see Baez go to 3B and Alcantara stick at 2B, myself, and I wouldn’t rule that out.

12:24
Comment From Guest
Rank ROS: Leonys Martin, Billy Butler, Tommy Medica, Chris Johnson. Thanks!

12:25
Nicholas Minnix: Yeesh. Um, Butler, Martin, Medica, Johnson.

12:25
Comment From Brad
Is it true Cubs put claim in for Hamels? Any shot they give up Russell or Bryant for him, and any shot Hamels approves trade?

12:25
Nicholas Minnix: Yes, sounds legit, but they won’t get a deal done.

12:25
Comment From Matt Adams
Peter Bourjos has been trolling the chats all week asking about his WAR compared to Matt Adams, same Q. He wants you to say that his defense is unreal and if he starts to really hit, he’d be great. Do not fall for it.

12:25
Nicholas Minnix: LOL. OK, I won’t!

12:25
Comment From Michael
Liriano has pitched well his last 3-4 starts. think he is legit ROS?

12:26
Nicholas Minnix: Yes, definitely a possibility. I thought the time down would probably be good for him. I’m sure he and PIT worked on some things mechanically then that he was missing to open the season.

12:26
Nicholas Minnix: Could still falter, of course, but I’d want to take a shot on him.

12:27
Comment From CuriousGeorge
This is probably more a question for Neil Weinberg but I figure maybe you know- I noticed for Xander Bogaerts his BsR is positive for his Oliver 5 year projections have it as negative. Any reason they would expect this?

12:33
Nicholas Minnix: My edu … cated guess is that Bogaerts doesn’t project extremely well as an offensive player. BsR doesn’t reward the individual events (HR primarily, I’d presume) that Bogaerts can produce. BsR also includes a couple of constants that are context dependent and some variables that can produce negative values. It can be unkind to certain types of players. You should ask Neil for more, surely.

12:34
Nicholas Minnix: Doesn’t reward them AS SIGNIFICANTLY I mean.

12:34
Comment From Matt Adams
are we certain on the hard shut-down of De Grom at 185? Keuchel a good replacement?

12:35
Nicholas Minnix: We kind of are, around there, yes. But deGrom should be around well into September, I’d think. Keuchel is a good own either way, yes, so if you’re looking to that marginal difference, surely a tiny, tiny edge in IP left to the lefty.

12:35
Comment From Michael
Vance Worley…. your thoughts?

12:36
Nicholas Minnix: Certainly will hit some corrections, but he’s … well, what he’s done is “legit,” not sure what else to say. His stuff isn’t great, but he may have been helped to rediscover some things that helped him to great command and control when he was young. Not great upside, long-term, but … great stream vs. SD. I’d still be wary vs. good teams ROS, at least.

12:36
Comment From Big Joe Mufferaw
Does Javier Baez make you realize just how amazing Gary Sheffield was? They both had similar swings and bat speed, yet Gary Sheffield had a K rate right around 10% (more around 7-8% early on) and a walk rate above 13% for his career.

12:37
Nicholas Minnix: Yes, have heard this comparison before. I’d hope that for Baez. Has a long way to go to get there, of course. Physically perhaps somewhat similar (actions), mentally, long way to make up gap.

12:37
Nicholas Minnix: Probably. Doesn’t mean it won’t happen, of course. Baez just undisciplined.

12:38
Comment From Hellboy
BA raves about Jimmy Nelson, but I don’t sense the same enthusiasm on FG. Your thoughts on his future? Thanks!

12:40
Nicholas Minnix: I’m just not as big a fan, myself. Control is regularly an issue. Have doubts that he’ll ever command more than a couple of pitches that are effective. Could prove that wrong, obviously. Just not as many good things as I’d like to see from a pitching prospect, esp. one who’s 25. Has a pretty good sinker and slider to work with, sure, I think needs something else.

Yo Nick, thanks as always for the chat. What single game/series in 2014 has done the most to change your perception about a team?

12:41
Nicholas Minnix: Thank you for joining! And man, I can’t say there is one. Recent: Yanks vs. DET, I like the Yanks as a legit wild card threat, at least. For a spot, not to stick around. They have found ways (in the margins, in terms of players).

12:42
Comment From bill
If you could only stash one, for 2015 production (position not important) would you rather have Jake Lamb or Jorge Soler?

12:42
Nicholas Minnix: Ugh, phew. Well, this answer seems likely to be wrong, to me, because Soler is a wild card big time, but I think he has more upside, so I’d rather take that shot. Plus I don’t have much confidence in ARI’s organization.

12:43
Comment From Ernie
I’m in a 5×5 fantasy baseball league where we are allowed 5 keepers. I’m currently planning on keeping Paul Goldschmidt, Adam Jones, Madison Bumgarner, and Zack Greinke. For my final keeper, I have to decide between Christian Yellich, Melky Cabrera, Gregory Polanco, Jon Lester, and Yoenis Cespedes. Who would you choose in my shoes?

12:44
Nicholas Minnix: My goodness. Trade Melky? Depends on how Polanco finishes season. Hate to keep 3 pitchers, Lester might be your BEST tho. Hmmm. I’d be tempted to keep Cespedes, see what he does in a walk year in Boston. Hope you have a few more months to decide, haha.

12:45
Comment From Zach
Would you rather have J.D. Martinez or Taveras ROS?

12:46
Nicholas Minnix: Gonna say Martinez. Like Taveras, think he will do fine ROS, but not special. Martinez will go thru a down period, I think, but recover and finish strong, fairly.

12:46
Comment From Jake
Biggest prospect letdown in 2014?

12:46
Nicholas Minnix: The Internet.

12:47
Nicholas Minnix: Taijuan Walker, off the top of my listed head.

12:47
Comment From Ronnie
Who do you think would be the most productive 1B from here on out: Duda, Trumbo, Napoli or Singleton? I’ve had Duda and just picked up Trumbo after losing Goldie, so I’m looking for the most consistent source of pop ROS.

12:48
Nicholas Minnix: Consistent, good luck. Duda has been most consistent there, I’d say, and your safest bet. Napoli follows, I think. Singleton is the fun gamble, I’d be willing to ride with him over Napoli. Trumbo should be, could go on tear, perhaps, but haven’t seen enough to make me confident.

12:49
Comment From Swatting Nats
Hey Nick, thanks for chatting. Between Souza and Michael Taylor, who sees regular playing time with the Nats sooner, and who has the better fantasy profile?

12:49
Nicholas Minnix: Souza sooner, surely, Taylor better, surely.

12:49
Comment From Big Joe Mufferaw
Are you a believer in Shane Greene? Solid Velocity, 58% GB rate, and solid command.

12:50
Nicholas Minnix: Believer, in the sense that he can be a 3.50-4.25 ERA guy, sure.

12:51
Comment From Rob
We all know it’s not happening, but what’s a reasonable package for Hamels from the Cubs? My thought: Vogelbach, Olt, Marco Hernandez, Jeferson Mejia, and another filler piece for Hamels (and his slightly too expensive deal). Cubs just have no incentive to give up a big package with Lester/Scherzer available and better trade targets for top prospects this winter (Wheeler, Archer, Odorizzi, etc.), right?

12:52
Nicholas Minnix: PHI would need at least 1 player who’s legit and close to MLB-ready if he’s not already for it to be reasonable, I think. Yeah, it’s not worth talking about, IMO, anyway.

12:52
Comment From Big Joe Mufferaw
Baseball America gave Dellin Betances the best curve in the AL and the 2nd best RP. Do you agree?

12:54
Nicholas Minnix: Um, yes? I haven’t graded all the curves. He’s been one of the top 5 RPs this season in terms of performance. I won’t call him the 2nd best reliever, IMO, saying a guy is 2nd best is more than just what a guy has done. He has to prove that the command will be consistent. But one of the top RP talents, obviously.

12:54
Comment From DC
Better ROS: Masterson or Hammel

12:54
Nicholas Minnix: Ugh. Hammel, because he doesn’t have to fix as much.

Middle infield glut, need to trade one of Lowrie, Prado or Baez. 14 team re-draft. Ride the upside of Baez? Thoughts on Lowrie vs Prado?

12:56
Nicholas Minnix: I’d deal Lowrie because I’d expect Prado to perform better, a little, better park, too, and Lowrie is still a bit of a health risk, at least more so than Prado. And I’d want to take the shot on Baez yes.

12:57
Comment From Raiders of the Lost Roark
H2H categories playoff strategy question: I’m in a 7X7 H2H league with 2 week playoff matchups. In a situation like that, would you try to isolate certain categories at the expense of others and try to lock down 8 points and the win, or just play your best lineup and hope it all shakes out? I’m thinking specifically about trading away some SB specialists and rolling out a roster of power-only types.

12:58
Nicholas Minnix: It depends on the types of players you can get to roll out the roster of power types. I think that’s a preferable strategy in H2H. If you have a very good roster, I’d be tempted just to see how it all shakes out. If you trade off … Rajai Davis for Mike Napoli, I mean, I have doubts that it works in your favor. Presuming some things, there, I’m sure.

Are the Phillies FO people insane or idiots? They asked for Aaron Judge in exchange for Marlon Byrd and did not move off that offer. Is this a case of greatly overvaluing players or not wanting to sell (when they REALLY should).

1:01
Nicholas Minnix: They are both. And what I read suggests that there was some stubbornness in their negotiating … the way it sounded it was Amaro felt insulted, perhaps he was stubborn at the cost of negotiation because he felt that he or his organization was insulted. Which is kind of childish. IDK specifics. They could certainly have gotten more than they were offered, but they didn’t seem willing to play ball, which is shortsighted, is my assumption, yes.

1:01
Comment From Jake
Beltran’s replacement level play has to be frustrating for New York. Over/Under one win in 2015?

1:02
Nicholas Minnix: I have a soft spot for him, so I’d bet over. But I lose often, haha. Health is deteriorating again, he’s old. Safer play is under. :( Will be interesting offseason, I’d revise my answer based on what happens with him health maintenance-wise this winter.

1:02
Comment From Rosey
What are your thoughts on Latos? Velo is down, K’s are down, but still effective. Should Red’s fans be worried?

1:03
Nicholas Minnix: A little, I think, given how this season began. I haven’t looked deeply into him, but I’d be a little worried. Rumor was Reds shopped him briefly at deadline. Perhaps they felt same fear? But all isn’t lost, yet.

I had Javier Baez, Kris Bryant, and Addison Russel. Since Russel’s trade to CHI, should I be concerned about their playing time going into 2015?

1:06
Comment From RP
Thanks for taking the time to do these. Any advice for aspiring sports/fantasy writers?

1:10
Nicholas Minnix: Yes, do it for free somewhere, and be willing to learn. I’d say if you’re a FG person, then the Community would be a good place to do it if fantasy was prevalent there, but it’s really not. But you have to put in some time. And never think you can’t learn more, or that you know it all. (Doesn’t mean I think you should lose your ability to reason and to disagree, disagreement is often productive.) That’s for fantasy. For sports, well, it’s a much similar process, with even harder work required. Meet nice, wholesome people in the industry and let them help you when they offer, that doesn’t hurt, haha.

1:10
Nicholas Minnix: Write somewhere. Get media access.

1:10

Thought on Jon Singleton?

1:11
Nicholas Minnix: Decent chance he busts, long-term, but a lot to like, think in a couple of years, he’s a 25-HR guy who hits .240 or .260, myself. OBP will be very good.

With international signings, it feels like there’s a lot of hooplah, then they just dissapear for a while until they’re tearing up AA. Why is there a meaningful difference between a big international signing and a high school draft pick? What do international guys usually do before they get to the minors?

1:16
Nicholas Minnix: I don’t know a lot about the int’l world, but there’s a lot to go through for some internationals. Cubans, especially, quite obviously. Many internationals are signed via exposure at team academies in foreign countries, and they stay there until they’re a little older, because I presume many are in their teens. The cultural differences as far as education systems and values in terms of education (neither is bad, IMO, to be clear, just a different value system, I think sometimes we “overvalue” education in terms of the paper and not the knowledge) between the U.S. put internationals on a different path. Just kind of my 10K-foot understanding.

1:17
Nicholas Minnix: I may not have said anything you didn’t already think, but details in terms of that, well, unnecessary, IMO.

1:17
Comment From LD
Duda, Napoli or Carter ROS (8×8 league- R, H, HR, RBI, SB, BB, K, AVG)

Tips for someone currently in the middle of the pack in a non keeper 12 team league. What’s the best way to go all in and try to get into the top 3?

1:19
Nicholas Minnix: Take huge risks … players who haven’t inspired at all, but you never know. I’d have said a couple of weeks ago to trade for Jay Bruce, perhaps, players like that. Need to take huge risks, likely.

1:19
Nicholas Minnix: Speaking of, J.A. Happ has been freaking unreal since the break. He annoys me. Like those K’s, though, will have to look at him.

1:19
Comment From Tony LaRussa
Which NL OF is best be for next few years: Marte, Yelich, Tavares?

1:20

1:20
Comment From Guy with a question
Where do you draft Scooter Gennett among 2b assuming he is full time next year?

1:20
Nicholas Minnix: Oy, get back to me in the winter. He’s top 12, maybe.

1:20
Comment From Funky Kole Kalhoun
Do you think Drew Hutchinson is remembering what he forgot he’d discovered earlier in the season? Looked good against the O’s, but then again so did JA Happ.

1:22
Nicholas Minnix: Could be. Hutchison hasn’t forgotten anything. He’s just in his first full year post surgery (I think it’s first full), inconsistent command is likely, for him, as a youngster, anyway. He’s been much better on an extra day of rest, I think. Many young guys seem to be, just my guess, haven’t examined.

The O’s can’t be dumb enough to send Gausman back down again for Ubaldo … can they?

1:24
Nicholas Minnix: Haha. I don’t think they will, given how long they’ve put it off. Never know, but I think at this point, it’s clear they want to keep Gausman around. I think they’re waiting for someone to give them a reason, which is kind of a strange thing to do, wait on a knee-jerk reaction, so maybe I’m wrong about that.

The 2 WC winners will be _________ and ____________. in the AL

1:25
Nicholas Minnix: Angels and Yankees

1:25
Nicholas Minnix: Exciting, eh? Haha. I almost said A’s and Yanks.

Carpenter has 3.6 WAR (projected for ~5 total) after a slow start to the year. How is that meh?

1:26
Nicholas Minnix: Um, it isn’t? Did someone call it meh?

1:26
Comment From Pizzy
When it comes to dynasty leagues do you go for depth or the best starting line up can get and then stash prospects/FA on your bench? Built my team over the last few seasons by trading away prospects on my bench for established players and it seems to be doing well but Im the only one really doing that? Also this is a forever dynasty where you keep 25 of 30 players

1:28
Nicholas Minnix: I go for … well I was going to say best lineup, but you need both. I don’t have this idea that there is a best way to do it, in that sense. There’s a lot of gray area. I want to build the best core I can and acquire depth too. I hope I have the assets to make that happen, I try to get them however.

1:31
Nicholas Minnix: I think some people place too much value on “potential” and not enough on production and present-day, what’s-next stuff. I think if it’s working, then go with it, right? Haha. If you’re doing what everyone else is doing, then you’re just competing with a larger group of people for the same types of assets. If guys help you win now, and they don’t want those, then keep winning!

Next 3 years who do you like, Brantley or Ozuna?

1:32
Nicholas Minnix: Man. Great question. This is a career year for Brantley. Ozuna has a little more upside, but Brantley is still a safer play. If I’m trading, I’d hope to get more for Brantley than Ozuna.

In a keep forever league with real salaries, I was offered: My Tanaka + Neil Walker or Trevor Bauer for his Freeman. I already have Hosmer. Tanaka worth the upgrade for Freeman?

1:33
Nicholas Minnix: Hell. Yes. Hosmer not in same clubhouse with Freeman. Tanaka will need TJS within the next few years.

1:34
Comment From Bob
I’m in a rebuild in my dynasty league and can’t find any takers for rental players (too expensive to keep for most other teams) like Adrian Gonzalez and Chase Utley. These players can help other teams, but nobody seems to want them. Do you have any suggestions on how I can market these guys?

Nicholas Minnix: Damn, that sucks. Print flyers. Get a direct-mail account. That sucks. I assume you’ve done the old “Hey folks, these guys can help you now, does anybody want them?” routine. Make direct offers to someone YOU think could use one of those players, and make it a reasonable offer, see if you get a response. Would hope they don’t ignore you.

Need to fill an OF spot with Cutch out. HR/RBI my weakest spots. Kole Calhoun or Yelich? If either is playing against a Lefty I’ll sit them.

Nicholas Minnix: Well I mean I like Calhoun more for the HR, obviously. That’s where I’d go.

Please rank in a 12 team roto redraft. Byrd, Crisp, Marte, polanco, Pagan and choo.

Nicholas Minnix: Geez. Depends on your needs, really, unless it’s a points league. I don’t see any of them doing anything much differently from what they’ve done. In terms of “value,” Byrd very safe, then Marte, Crisp, Choo, Pagan, Polanco, but they’re interchangeable really at any given time. Much health risk in Crisp, some in Pagan. It’s a very difficult rank to make without a lot of time.

Nicholas Minnix: OK folks, I’m wrapping it up. I appreciate you all taking all this time to chat with me.

Nicholas Minnix: I look forward to another next week. Hope you all have a great weekend, enjoy what’s left of the summer, enjoy your rawhide. Good day!
