One Night Only: Game Previews for September 17th

Hey, Strasnuts, wouldn’t it be hilarious if you walked someone someday?

Regarding a Thing the Author Has Done
Once again, the author has seen fit to assign a NERD score of greater than 10 to Mr. Stephen Strasburg for the purposes of giving Strasburg’s game the evening’s highest overall game score.

On What Authority the Author Did That
This authority, mostly:

On What Other Authority He Did It
That, especially with the Red Sox’ victory over the Rays last night, Strasburg’s start probably really does represent the most interesting game this evening.

Strasburg’s Numbers So Far
Strasburg has done this through his first two starts: 8.0 IP, 27.6% K, 0.0% BB, 33.3% GB, 2.14 SIERA, 2.26 xFIP, 59 xFIP-.

A Brief Note on the Nationals Broadcast Team
From my brief experience of listening to him, I feel confident saying that colorman F.P. Santangelo is above average.

Agreed that FP is an above average color guy. Does sometimes still buy into dubious concepts, though–for instance, he believes in the whole “pitch-to-contact” thing. He’s mostly cool, though, but some of my opinion on the matter may be colored (haha, get it?) by the performance of his predecessor, Rob D(r)ibble.

Notice how no one is mentioning that Strasburg’s fastball isn’t touching 100 mph anymore and that now it tends to sit at 92-95? He’s not even striking out a batter an inning in his 3 games back. He was told by his manager not to overthrow. This means Strasburg fans aren’t gonna see 97-100 much anymore. A 92-95 mph from a RHP isn’t much. So while he could end up with a solid ERA unless he starts overthrowing again you can pretty much say goodbye to the possibility of a strikeout an inning and settle more for 7 strikeouts per 9 innings instead. Still good but not what fans want.

Actually, no. Having been at that game and watching it closely, my eyeball is that without that one inning where he was sitting 92 (and face it, TJ can do that to you for a random inning), he’d be averaging 96.8 on the fastball. Right now he has a 97-99 mph 4-seamer and a 94-96 2-seamer. Oh, and now 3 starts back from TJ, he STILL hasn’t walked ANYONE.
