One Night Only: Game Previews for September 8th

After a battery of tests, FanGraphs has verified that Chris Schwinden is not Miguel Batista.

Featured Game
Atlanta (4) at New York Nationals (4) | 16:10 ET
Julio Teheran, one of baseball’s top pitching prospects, makes his third start of the season for the Braves.
• You can see Teheran’s numbers at Triple-A Gwinnett to the right of this colon: 144.2 IP, 7.59 K/9, 2.99 BB/9, 0.31 HR/9, 3.06 FIP.
• For the Mets, right-hander Chris Schwinden, 24, makes his major-league debut.
• While not necessarily a top prospect, Schwinden has the distinction of being not Miguel Batista.
• Which must be nice for Mets fans, at least.

San Diego (6) at Arizona (8) | 21:40 ET
• Is anyone curious about how Aaron Hill‘s performed since joining Arizona?
• If so, here’s that answer in number form: 56 PA, .392/.429/.627, .413 BABIP, 170 RC+.
• Replace the BABIP with Hill’s .284 career mark, and the result is a 110 wRC+
• Which, that’d still be his best performance since 2009 and second-best overall.
• Or, um, his best performance as a baseballer, that is.

What’s wrong with Miguel Batista? Surely his 2.25 ERA is sustainable.

  3. Chris says:

The Braves are facing a pitcher making his first ever start? They’ll probably go hitless for the first 6 innings.

I’ve still never been able to understand the team nerd scores, especially when a team like the Phillies (the best in baseball, and one of the more entertaining to watch) has one of the lowest rankings to be found.

i second Bs contention. aren’t these rankings a bit outdated? are the numbers crunched everytime the nerd scores are released? show me a spreadsheet!

Phillies are old and guaranteed a playoff spot. Pass.

Also, their TV crew is horrible (which is not part of Team score, but factors into me never watching them).

    • The thing that’s most interesting about the Phils — and which has helped them win so many games — is their starting pitching, but Team NERD doesn’t include starters. That’s only factored in for the Game Scores.

Halladay, Lee, and Hamels all have NERD scores of 10. That’s pretty impressive, considering only 13 pitchers total (of the 212 pitchers with at least 20 IP as a starter). When those guys start, the Phils will have almost always have a Game Score around 6 or 7, depending on the opponent.

But yeah, the Team score is lower. The team is average-ish in terms of WAR and not young and also pretty expensive. Victorino and Utley are excellent, but there’s been a lot of Michael Martinez and Wilson Valdez and Raul Ibanez this season. When the team’s healthy, they’re probably better than a 3, but not by much.

    • Oh, and I should add: I do update all the NERD scores daily, and you can see all of them once a week at the Leaderboards of Pleasure:

If you can make sure to say the words “Leaderboards of Pleasure” in as dramatic a possible way, I’d very much appreciate it — like, in the same way you’d say “Cave of Wonders,” for example.

You’ve got the Braves pitchers swapped. Minor is actually pitching game 1, Teheran game 2.
