Rockies Make Front Office Changes

Well, apparently I’m not the only one who thinks the Rockies need to make some changes, as Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports that General Manager Dan O’Dowd is going to have his job change to “focus more on the minor leagues and player development”, which doesn’t sound very much like a GM at all. Assistant GM Bill Geivett is being given “expanded day-to-day duties with the Major League Club”, which sounds much more like what a GM actually does in most organizations.

Renck’s article notes that O’Dowd is retaining his title and Geivett will still report directly to O’Dowd, but this seems like the kind of arrangement that might not last very long. The Rockies are a massive disappointment and in need of a change of directions, so I would expect that a more permanent change will probably be made before too long. If Geivett becomes the de facto GM, they’ll likely reward him with the official title eventually.

Building a winner at altitude is not easy, but the Rockies have made too many questionable decisions lately to continue on with the current plan. A change was necessary, and Rockies fans should be happy that the organization isn’t sticking with the status quo any longer.

So it’s like when Dick Cheney’s job title was Vice President.

Monforts did a nice job of smearing their dinner so it looks like they ate their peas here. Its all still there, it just looks a bit different.

This is a huge slap in the face to Rockies Fans everywhere, we demanded change, and instead we get nothing, just a nice little press release that tries to insult our intelligence.

O’Dowd is still in charge of making trades, signing free agents, etc, so in short, no change was made.

Who needs quality when you’ve got quantity!

Given the choice between firing him and not firing him, the Rockies invented a seemingly impossible third option where O’Dowd is simultaneously fired and not fired. Does Schrodinger know about this?

No, but I hear Rockies fans are ready to seal O’Dowd in the box and not look inside.

O’Dowd was part of an Indians front office that brought in Manny, Thome, Lofton, Baerga, Kent, the Alomars but oddly enough they never developed any pitching until after he left

Sounds like he’s using a similar theory in Colorado.

I hear this is only the beginning of the changes. Soon, they will go to a four-man GM rotation.

Who in the Rockies organization was responsible for drafting Greg Reynolds with the second pick, when Longoria, Lincecum, and Kershaw were on the table?
Now that the Rox will probably have the second pick this year, will O’Dowd take full responsiblity for this?

This logic is stupid. You could also say “who was responsible for skipping over Pujols and Trout? And why did 6 teams skip over Tulo?” There are ALWAYS draft busts

Not that I’m necessarily defending O’Dowd here, but a lot of anti-O’Dowd sentiment stems from things that happened 5, 6, 7 years ago. Not that drafting Greg Reynolds suck, but people are quick to point that out but not really highlight the fact that since 2008 our drafts have actually been pretty good.

ok alex
let’s revisit this issue when the Y2012 amatuer draft occurs. This is a critical, if not franchise making, decision for years to come.
don’t get me wrong, I’ve been a rockies season tix holder since day 1; drafting and development for the Rockies are the key issues to success….Is Dan O’dowd up to this?
Draft “busts” just don’t add up when you consider that the Rox don’t have the resources to screw up….

Kidzero, Just because your team lacks the resources to whiff on draft, doesnt make it immune to whiffs. It happens. Ask KC, Pitt, and other small market/small budget teams. Yes, you have to draft smarter, but…. nobody is perfect, and all teams have their “drafted bust before star” stories.

The first four rounds of that 2006 draft was ugly for the Rockies with inmortals Greg Reynolds, David Christensen, Keith Weiser and Craig Baker. Too much altitude can cloud scouts judgment.

Lazy article and research, Mr. Cameron. Not impressed. I’m not a Rockies fan, and thus not intimately familiar with the situation, but I think I’d at least have the common sense to try to get a vague pulse on the fanbase and ownership before offering judgment.

Lol what are you talking about? This wasnt meant to be a detailed “opinion” piece chock full of research and golden informational nuggets. He was reporting news. Nothing more.

I just took the vague pulse on the fanbase. The results were: “blech”, followed by “ugh”, and then “yarf.”

Remember in spring training when the Rox had 10 starting pitchers? How were they gonna use all of the gems that ODowner had collected in the offseason? Remember they were all high flyball pitchers? Rox fans thought crafty ol’ Dan had found the new inefficiency. Moneyball 2.0.

Fail.

This club needs a complete reboot. Remember a few seasons back when it was all about sinker/groundball pitchers?
