I like Whiting because he has the potential to offer some spot starts too, if needed.

Granting that they’re not going to trade any of their big four (Miller, Rosenthal, Martinez, Wacha) for anything less than an All-Star, wouldn’t it be more ambitious, yet possible, to target something in between? Say Jordan Swagerty or Seth Maness or maybe Keith Butler or Maikel Cleto? There are a vast number of Whiting-like guys in that system (note that Cleto is not a “Whiting-like guy” in how he pitches — pure, uncontrolled power — but rather in status on the farm), and they’re unlikely all to reach the Show in St. Louis. A trade might try to reach a bit higher than Whiting. Or are you saying I underestimate him?
