After showing little power throughout his minor league career, Walters put on a power show at Triple-A in 2013. He did that by seemingly swinging at everything, as he continued to strike out too frequently, but this time did so while rarely taking a walk. While his offensive game and approach would be questionable if he were a corner infielder, he has actually primarily played shortstop. Showing that much power as a shortstop is intriguing, even though it comes with few other skills. Unfortunately, the 24-year-old is stuck behind
at the moment, so he may remain stuck at Triple-A for a while longer. Ryan Zimmerman's throwing problems might become relevant to Walter's playing time if they continue, so don't throw this name away. (
The Quick Opinion:
Walters posted an impressive .265 isolated slugging percentage, primarily coming as a shortstop, and showed other skills that are not typical of a middle infielder. The power is intriguing, but he does little else offensively and is currently blocked at shortstop in Washington, so Major League playing time could be tough to come by.
Walters is basically the second coming of Michael Morse -- a not-so-athletic player with limited defensive value who can hit some home runs but strikes out too much and doesn't like to walk. He might find some playing time with Cleveland in 2015 after spending time at five different positions (second, third, short, left and right field) in '14. However, the playing time with the Indians will likely have to come from third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall regressing, sophomore shortstop Jose Ramirez falling on his face (combined with some regression from top prospect Francisco Lindor), or an injury to one of the club's top four or five outfielders. And even then, Mike Aviles will likely be the first beneficiary of additional playing time. (Marc Hulet)
The Quick Opinion:
Power is not easy to come by in the 'new MLB' so Morse is a name to at least keep in the back of your mind. But he doesn't project to receive much playing time in Cleveland in 2015. And even if he does, the power comes with a modest batting average and lots of strikeouts.
Zach Walters crushed minor league pitching in 2013 and 2014, but due to his abhorrent plate discipline, he received little big league consideration from the Nationals. He spent 2015 with the Indians Triple-A affiliate, but didn't achieve the same level of offensive dominance. He also posted a 15:0 strikeout to walk ratio in 30 plate appearances with Cleveland, which is the opposite of reassuring. Walters underwent labrum surgery after last season, so he may not be 100% healthy to start the year: It often takes several months to return to full strength. Walters has enough things working against him that you can safely ignore him in all formats. But if he somehow winds up playing regularly, he could be a sneaky source of power in AL-only. (Chris Mitchell)
The Quick Opinion:
You can do without Walters on draft day. But if he somehow finds playing time, he could conceivably be a cheap source of power in AL-only leagues.
