Xavier Nady’s first season back after a second Tommy John surgery on his right elbow was not promising. Nady platooned with Micah Hoffpauir at first base after Derrek Lee was traded to the Braves, attaining 317 at-bats while batting .256/.306/.353 in 2010. The Cubs had a crowded outfield for much of the season while Nady continued to have plate-discipline problems, striking out on 27% of at-bats while struggling greatly against left-handed pitchers during his stint with the Cubs. Unfortunately, Nady does not appear to be a starting outfielder on most MLB teams, let alone fantasy teams, and is unlikely to hit 20 HRs again in the near future. Optimistic projections have him at .260/.330/.420. With two Tommy John reconstructive surgeries, you have to wonder which teams are going to even take a chance with him. Unless he clearly is an everyday outfielder who stays healthy, Nady is not even a buy-low candidate you should consider for your fantasy team. (Albert Lyu)
The Quick Opinion:
Nady had a second Tommy John surgery and does not project to get much playing time in the Cubs' crowded outfield. Two surgeries and uncertainty at a starting job should convince you to look elsewhere, with optimistic projections having him at .260/.330/.420.
Nady was part of the D-backs' first-base rotation until breaking his hand in August. Then the emergence of Paul Goldschmidt made him expendable. A free agent at press time, Nady will probably catch on somewhere and play a little first, a little left field. Upside is non-extant, though. (Carson Cistulli)
Between hamstring issues, a fractured hand, shoulder problems and Tommy John surgery, Nady has been a Red Cross poster boy for Major League Baseball over the last few season. He's failed to appear in more than 82 games in each of the last two seasons and spent more time last year on the disabled list than he did in games for either the Nationals or the Giants, the two clubs silly enough to actually try and get some use out of him. 2012, with its .184/.253/.316 slash line and 22.3-percent strikeout rate over 59 games, should probably have been his last year. The Royals felt differently and signed him to a minor league deal to boost their depth at the outfield positions within the organization. There is but the slimmest of chances that Nady actually breaks camp with the big club this spring and should probably be ignored in most fantasy formats. Yes, even in the deepest of leagues. (Howard Bender)
The Quick Opinion:
Nady's days as a starter are long gone and with the way injuries have taken a toll on him over the last few years, his days as even a part-timer are numbered. Having recently signed a minor league deal with the Royals this offseason, Nady will compete for a bench spot with the big club this spring. But even if he does earn a roster spot, his fantasy value is incredibly limited.
Ah, Xavier Nady. The now 36-year-old was a serious fantasy commodity back in 2008, when he hit .305/.357/.510 with 25 homers. Alas, that was seven years ago, and he's been completely worthless ever since. Nady has played for five different organizations in the last three years, logging just 208 major-league plate appearances in that span. (
The Quick Opinion:
Nady is currently a free agent, and it is unthinkable that he could be fantasy relevant in 2015.
