The former top Pirates prospect turned in an elite season in 2010, whiffing nearly a batter per inning, limiting walks and racking up grounders more than half the time that the opposition put the ball in play. In 2011, however, he returned to mediocrity. He still scorched the earth, but Burnett only struck out 5.2 per nine innings, walked 3.3 and saw his FIP climb from 2.73 to 4.51 in the process. Burnett continued to shut down fellow lefties but his control waned against righties, which is nothing new for him save for 2010 (he’s got a career .348 OBP against right-handers, and .300 versus lefties). He’ll continue to be the first lefty out of the bullpen for Washington, though he’s clearly behind Tyler Clippard for hold chances and has little chance of getting saves. (David Golebiewski)
The Quick Opinion:
Burnett takes down lefties and doesn’t get totally thumped by righties, but he’s not in the same league as Clippard and Drew Storen. He’ll get some holds, but precious few saves.
The Angels traded reliever Jordan Walden for Tommy Hansen this offseason but otherwise revamped their bullpen by signing Ryan Madson and Sean Burnett. With Madson (and his Closing Experience) in the fold along with Ernesto Frieri, Burnett isn't in line to receive many saves but he's still a very useful and quite good reliever. Burnett doesn't throw hard but his 90 mph sinker from the left side gets the ground balls (57.4% ground ball rate last year) and he compliments the sinker with a slider and change-up, enabling him to miss quite a few bats (9.05 strikeouts per nine; 10.8 swinging strike rate) for someone who is often considered simply a lefty specialist. That's not to say that Burnett doesn't have any obvious platoon issues (.237 wOBA vs. lefties; .327 vs. righties) but as the primary left-hander in the bullpen, Burnett should see a few save chances against a tough left-handed hitter, even though he won't receive them in bunches. (
The Quick Opinion:
Forget Josh Hamilton, Sean Burnett was the biggest acquisition for the Angels this offseason! Well, that might be a bit of an overstatement but Burnett is left-handed, throws strikes and kills worms -- he's pretty good!
His season effectively ended in late April when he hit the disabled list with forearm tightness. That eventually gave way to surgery in early August on his flexor tendon which puts the start date for his 2014 debut in doubt. He had some fantasy relevance in 2011 when he won five games and saved four, but that was his fantasy moment in the sun. Even a healthy Burnett is at least two seats away from the closer role in Anaheim. (Jason Collette)
The Quick Opinion:
He had some fantasy relevance in 2011 when he won five games and saved four, but that was his fantasy moment in the sun.
Burnett has pitched a total of just 16.2 innings between the minors and majors over the last two seasons. Tommy John surgery performed last June will knock him out until around midseason. He can safely be ignored. (
