Year in Review:
Theriot’s 2008 propelled him into near stardom when combined with a strikingly appropriate and obvious nickname (The Riot), as well as a large market that spent most of the decade looking for “the answer” at shortstop. Theriot is no Brendan Harris, Ronny Cedeno, or Alex S. Gonzalez, though; his BABIP may have receded alongside his walk rate, but he still hit and fielded well enough to be an above-average player. An ISO of .085 was higher than any other extended time in Theriot’s Major League career, but a declined walk rate and increased strikeout rate hurt his overall numbers.
The Year Ahead:
In a deeper league, Theriot’s not a bad option. His batting average, runs scored, and stolen base totals could make him desirable even. Prospect Starlin Castro’s buzz is off the charts and some have speculated he could reach the Majors in 2010. That seems optimistic and a bit misguided, but Theriot is 30 years old, so don’t expect a sudden leap in offensive ability, and there’s no reason to even consider him an option if it requires a keeper designation. (R.J. Anderson)
Another reason to love 5x5 leagues: Ryan Theriot is a flat-liner at the plate, not Jason Kendall-level, and maybe a bit better than Yuniesky Betancourt, but not much. But hey, this is 5x5 Fantasy, and, given the playing time, Theriot will probably still about 20 bases! Plus, he's a shortstop. What this means is that while Theriot shouldn't figure significantly in your draft-day plans, he should be somewhere on your list. He's not going to do anything else for you besides add some steals and fill the shortstop spot (his average won't kill you, probably, but it isn't going to be good), but if the Cardinals decide to start him most of the season, that has value. Should be drafted in most NL-only leagues. (Matt Klaassen)
The Quick Opinion:
Theriot can't hit, but he can steal some bases. That and shortstop eligibility is enough to give him value in NL-only leagues, at least.
Theriot's bat might play at shortstop these days -- a .321 on-base percentage is well above the positional average -- but unfortunately he simply can't hack it there with the glove. As such, without any real power -- three home runs the past two seasons -- he's limited to a utility role. His shortstop qualification could have use in some deeper leagues, but that's about it, and he probably won't get enough plate appearances to really pay it off. (Jack Moore)
The Quick Opinion:
Theriot's time as a starter is mercifully over. Look for him to languish in a utility role, likely somewhere in the National League.
Until Marco Scutaro arrived in late July, Ryan Theriot was the everyday second baseman for the Giants in 2012. Manager Bruce Bochy often batted Theriot in the two spot, even. Then the player did nothing in 2012 to earn every day playing time, and he did less to earn the number two spot in the lineup (.270/.316/.321 with a 12.2% strikeout rate). Theriot will likely end up as a platoon player somewhere in 2013. Don't expect much from him. (Wendy Thurm/
