Thome had a good season in 2010 as the DH for the Minnesota Twins by hitting 25 home runs and batting .283. He went mainly undrafted, but for the people that picked him up he added some much-needed home-run numbers. There is no reason to think that he can't repeat these numbers in 2011. By being only the DH, his 40-year-old body will not be stressed by playing in the field. Being only a DH also brings up the question on where to draft him. He is only available for the utility position and that position should be filled at the start of the season by a position player (surplus good-hitting 1B or OF, if available) and, when an injury occurs, this player moves into the main lineup. It's possible that many fantasy owners will stay away from him entirely and some team could easily concentrate there money or picks at other positions and take the chance that he will be available later in the draft or for little money. Now, all some team needs to do is sign him and state their intentions of using him as a full-time DH. (Jeff Zimmerman)
The Quick Opinion:
Thome's value could take a hit because he doesn't figure to play everyday for the Twins.
The White Sox let Jim Thome walk after 2009, and he proceeded to sign with Minnesota for cheap and absolutely mash the ball for one of his best seasons ever in 2010. He did not hit nearly that well in 2011, but he still hit. He would have made great sense as a left-handed platoon DH for many teams, as he still takes his walks and hits for power. Naturally, he signed with the Phillies, a National League team, where his primary job will be pinch-hitting. Thome supposedly is "working out" to play some first base now and then, but we will see how that actually "works out." He would be a nice buy if he were on an American League team, but on an NL team, he's worth maybe a dollar in deep leagues. (Matt Klaassen)
The Quick Opinion:
Thanks, Jim Thome, for doing the one thing that could kill your otherwise-decent deep league fantasy value: signing with an National League team.
Jim Thome's staggering career home run and RBI totals are a true marvel. But at 42, this free-swinging, oft-injured lefty doesn't command much attention in fantasy circles any more. Thome enters 2013 as a free agent, and he will likely only have value should he sign with an American League organization that could utilize him versus right-handed pitchers in the designated hitter role. Even then, his value is limited as he's without a position and struggled as a member of the Orioles in 2012 in his DH role, hitting only three home runs over 115 plate appearances, striking out almost 35% of the time with his isolated slugging percentage slipping to an uncharacteristic .139. If it's not the end, it's certainly near for Thome. (
The Quick Opinion:
You would need to participate in a particularly deep league to make Jim Thome useful on your fantasy squad. Thome will need to sign with an AL squad willing to utilize him versus right-handed pitchers frequently, and you'd also need a DL slot to manage his aged bones. And even then, you really ought to have better options.
