Profile: For some reason, teams continue to think it is a good idea to make Rodney their closer, despite a history of posting high walk rates (with the exception of 2012) and earned run averages typically above 3.00 (with the exception of 3 seasons). Still, the Padres benefited greatly from an excellent 3 months posting a disgusting 0.31 ERA while recording 17 saves. Regression was certain to occur as his fielding independent pitching was 2.31 with the Padres, which is still excellent for a guy like Rodney, but indicative of the slide that was bound to occur. Enter the Marlins trading for him at the end of June and boy did that carriage turn into a pumpkin. After not giving up a single home run with San Diego, he gave up 5 with the Marlins and his ERA shot up to a 5.89 (FIP was 4.97), and the Rodney we have to come to know and love returned. Granted, the home run per 9 of 1.23 with Miami is uncharacteristic for a guy like Rodney, as was the BB% of 14%, the walks have always been a concern for Rodney. Rodney signed a one-year deal with Arizona and due to a lack of true competition outside of Jake Barrett, Rodney will probably see a decent amount of save opportunities. From a save volume standpoint, it’s not a terrible play, but just be prepared to take a hit in all of your other categories. (Paul Kastava)

The Quick Opinion: Rodney had a Jekyll and Hyde season posting a 0.31 ERA with the Padres and a 5.89 with the Marlins. He will get opportunities to close games with the Diamondbacks and could be a cheap option for saves, while potentially destroying the rest of your categories.
