Profile: Chavez, a career journeyman, spent 2016 in Toronto and Los Angeles, appearing in 63 games exclusively as a reliever. However, over the past three seasons, he has started 47 games with general effectiveness (3.82 FIP, 3.74 xFIP), giving some indication that he can be an at least league-average starter when given the opportunity. Given what league average starters cost, perhaps it is surprising that the Angels signed him for a one-year $5.75 million contract. While there is always risk that he will go back to the bullpen, given his aptitude in both roles, Chavez appears to be the team’s fifth starting heading in to 2017 and will likely have more job security than he has had in prior seasons - the Angels appear to have plenty of injury risk in their rotation. Chavez should be a serviceable starter again in 2017, pitching most of his games in a favorable park, allowing him to fill the back of deeper fantasy rosters (like Ottoneu) as a role piece. (Joe Douglas)

The Quick Opinion: Chavez should start in 2017 and could make for a back-end flier capable of making spot starts in good parks. While he isn’t excellent at any one thing, Chavez appears to be a serviceable starter with more job security than in recent years.
