Gonzalez Germen made his major league debut out of the bullpen for the Mets in 2013. He spent most of his minor league career as a starter before being converted last season before his call up. He struggled with his control in his brief stint in Flushing, but that was inconsistent with his profile as a minor leaguer. He posted a useful strikeout rate of roughly one per inning and is not prone to giving up the long ball. With a good slider and change up, he also can pitch to both righties and lefties. If he can recapture his control, he profiles as a useful major league reliever with the potential to fill in as a spot starter when needed. Middle relievers are highly undervalued in most fantasy formats, but they are fairly plentiful as well. So, even if Germen can rise to level of the better middle relievers, that would only make him one of many. Therefore, there is no reason to target him in any format. (Derek Ambrosino)
The Quick Opinion:
Gonzalez Germen profiles as a useful major league reliever since he features no pronounced handedness splits, frugal long ball rates, good strikeout rates, and a history of control in the minors. While Germen has potential to rise to the level of a very good reliever, he doesn’t seem poised to distinguish himself from several other useful players of the like. Therefore, he can be ignored in all formats on draft day.
Owner of the changeup with the highest whiff rate in baseball last season, Gonzalez Germen still has a long way to go to fantasy relevance. Having been cut and picked up by half the league before pitchers and catchers report, you can comfortably say that he's on the fringe -- and yet still has the whiff of talent about him. (Eno Sarris)
Minimum two hundred thrown, only A.J. Ramos had a changeup that got more whiffs per pitch than Gonzalez Germen last season. That pitch is why, every time someone releases Germen -- he can be homer prone, and for some reason his mid-nineties fastball plays down -- some other team picks him up. Now with the Rockies, anything is possible. At least he's not trying to make it with a curveball. Germen is a longshot, but a decent one in the deepest of leagues. (Eno Sarris)
Germen now has the fourth-best changeup whiff rate in baseball (minimum 200 thrown) instead of the first-best, and that's why he keeps getting picked up by teams. However, here's why he keeps getting dropped: no command and no third pitch. It's too bad, but unless you've got a knuckleball, it looks like one good pitch is not enough. Now Germen will ply his trade in Japan, and you don't have to worry about him any more. (Eno Sarris)
