Profile: Papelbon struggled with an oblique injury and poor performance last season. The Nationals acted decisively to designate him for assignment in the midst of their playoff race. Most pitchers of his talent level would have been given more leeway to regain confidence in a low-leverage role, but Papelbon has always been... controversial. Of course, you're familiar with the infamous Bryce Harper Choke Out of 2015. The Nationals justified keeping him because he was producing. Once that ended, it was easier to cut ties. The 36-year-old is a free agent now. Due to a family matter, he may sit out part or all of the 2017 season. From there, it can be a slippery slope to retirement. (Brad Johnson)

The Quick Opinion: Papelbon was ousted from the nation's capitol after roughly one calendar year as the closer. Injuries and an off-the-field issue appear to have temporarily waylaid his career.
