Profile: Injuries sapped most of Escobar's productivity last year, as he hit just .236/.280/.338 after back-to-back years with a weighted on-base average over .315. Prior to 2016, Escobar had evolved into a solid shortstop/utility man, with limited discipline but fairly good contact skills and solid pop for his size. In 2016, Escobar missed time with hamstring and groin issues, and at times ceded playing time to Eduardo Nunez, and down the stretch, Jorge Polanco, as he was outplayed by both players offensively by a wide margin. Escobar's role is unclear heading into 2017; he could be the full-time shortstop in the event of a Brian Dozier trade, as that would move Polanco to second base and leave the team without an obvious bridge to Nick Gordon, who is probably two years away. But if the team holds on to Dozier, Escobar might be scraping for at-bats behind him, Polanco and Miguel Sano at third base. He's not a great fantasy consideration as a starter; as a utility player, he's persona non grata. He's a great clubhouse guy and a good teammate — he's affectionately dubbed Dozier "O'Conner" due to his resemblance to Paul Walker's "Fast and the Furious" character — but unless he's a full-time starting shortstop, he'll have no value in fantasy leagues. The Quick Opinion: If Escobar's named the starting shortstop for the Twins, he could provide an owner with a cheap source of doubles, a few home runs and a so-so batting average. That'll only happen if Dozier is traded, and if the team doesn't make a subsequent move to fill shortstop behind that. Don't hold your breath.
