After the disastrous Mark Teahen experiment, the White Sox are understandably looking for better defense at the hot corner. In Brent Morel, they may have one of the best young defensive third baseman in baseball, and his glove could open a door for real playing time in Chicago this summer. How well he’ll hit is another question, however. His lines in Double-A and Triple-A last season look good, but they’re heavily based on high BABIPs, and the combination of gap power and an aggressive approach isn’t one that usually works in the big leagues. I don’t know that Morel will hit enough to justify an everyday job this year, but this is an organization that used Mark Kotsay at DH, so their standards may be lower than we might think. If Morel makes a few flashy plays in spring training, he could open camp as the team’s third baseman. He probably shouldn’t be on your squad this year, however. (Dave Cameron)
The Quick Opinion:
Average power at best, an approach that could be exploited by good pitchers, and minimal experience against high level competition mean that Morel is probably not the kind of guy you'll get much offense from this year.
Morel's first season in the majors -- much of it as the White Sox' starting third baseman -- doesn't appear to have been a rousing success, offensively speaking, at first or second or even third glance. He slashed just .245/.287/.366 (.262 BABIP); he had just 29 extra-base hits in 444 plate appearances. Over the last 36 games (135 plate appearances) of the season, Morel was a different player, however, slashing .219/.326/.474 (despite a very low .205 BABIP) and hitting eight of his 10 total home runs, while walking at a dramatically higher rate (13.3%, compared to his season mark of 5.0%). Nor is this necessarily a case of cherry-picking stats: walk rate (200 plate appearances) and home-run rate (300) become reliable at a relatively low threshold of plate appearances. (Carson Cistulli)
The Quick Opinion:
Despite decidedly sub-par stats, the last 1.5 months of Morel's 2011 suggests he has breakout potential, making him someone upon whom to speculate.
Hopefully, like the edible mushroom that shares his name, Morel enjoys shady areas -- the acquisition of Jeff Keppinger will mean plenty of time in the dugout for him. Once a reasonably well-liked prospect, Morel has now been replaced via trade and then via free agency; the White Sox have turned sour on Morel and fantasy owners should do the same. (Dan Wade)
Despite the White Sox's black hole at third last season, Morel only received 30 plate appearances in the majors. With the team trading for Matt Davidson during the offseason, Morel is no higher than fourth on the team's depth chart at third. (
Scrubby McScrubberson teased us all by hitting eight homers in September of 2011 and then none since over 177 at-bats. With little power or interest in taking a base on balls, his offensive upside (and therefore his fantasy usefulness) is limited. (
