Profile: The term "second division starter" was specially formulated for Pittsburgh Pirates. Mercer is a shining example of one such starter of the second division. In his best season, 2014, he posted exactly 2.0 WAR - also exactly league average according to the designers of WAR. His other three full major league seasons netted somewhat less than 2.0 WAR. Even the Pirates probably prefer to use Mercer as a super utility man. Unfortunately, Jung Ho Kang didn't work out as a shortstop, and the other internal options aren't any better. Perhaps they can provide an opportunity for a free agent like Stephen Drew. After all, Mercer's defense took a big step backwards in 2016 according to UZR. A starting shortstop can be a below-average hitter or a below-average fielder, but he can't be both, and his fantasy value is limited as a result. (Brad Johnson)

The Quick Opinion: Mercer was a tidy little middle infield patch for the Pirates from 2013-2016. Entering his age-30 season, it's probably time for Pittsburgh to troll for a replacement. You should find a replacement on your fantasy squad as well.
