Profile: Kennedy has elite swing and miss stuff, which has led to double digit swinging strike rates and the 11th-most strike outs over the past six seasons. Unfortunately, he has given up far too many home runs over the course of his career, which leaves him in a precarious position in terms of value. This is made all the more extreme when you look at his second half numbers from 2016, in which he dropped his home run rate significantly while maintaining his strikeout numbers. As a result, he had a 2.66 ERA over his final thirteen starts, during which he allowed seven home runs in 81.1 innings. Granted, this success came on the heels of a June/July period in which he gave up 18 home runs and 36 earned runs in nine starts. Towards the end of 2016, Kennedy jumped up towards a 68% fastball usage rate, at the expense of his changeup. This is particularly interesting due to his changeup’s ability to induce ground balls, which helped offset his fastball’s well above average fly ball rate. Instead, it appears he is doubling down on fly balls, which could make him more susceptible to home runs in the future. (Andrew Perpetua)

The Quick Opinion: Kennedy is tantalizingly close to becoming an ace, but his propensity for home runs appears to be insurmountable. At this point, he is more aptly described as a 5th or 6th starter in most league formats.
