Profile: Rodriguez rode a cool 10.0 K/9 rate (27% strikeout rate) in 2015 to a 3.84 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP across 58.2 relief innings for Oakland, but he seemed to trend the wrong way a bit last year. The Texas native fanned fewer batters (23% K%) and issued more free passes (10% walk rate), notching 40.2 frames on the way to a 4.20 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP before shoulder injuries ended his season in July. Rodriguez’s 3.61 FIP suggests he pitched a bit better than those numbers indicate, and one would figure that the abysmal A’s defense -- dead last in a number of metrics -- did him no favors. Still, the biggest problem seemed to be the right-hander’s platoon splits, as he was clobbered by left-handed batters; they hit .313/.421/.542 against him in 58 plate appearances, including nine walks to just eight strikeouts. This weakness was not nearly as prevalent earlier in his career, and his drastic decline in use of his curveball (and lesser so his changeup) last year is surely related to his struggles, either as a causation or response. Looking ahead, Rodriguez will compete for a spot in the Cubs’ bullpen next year, his age-33 season, limiting his fantasy value to just the deepest of formats. (Dylan Higgins)

The Quick Opinion: Martinez has struck out more than a batter per inning in his major league career as a reliever, but his lifetime 4.35 ERA and 1.32 WHIP are not particularly inspiring. Going from one of the worst defensive teams to one of the best could certainly give him a bump, as well as starting the season healthy, but he is unlikely to find himself in any valuable fantasy roles anytime soon.
