RotoWire News: Fiers, who is competing with Joe Musgrove to be the No. 5 starter, may have a spot in the rotation when the regular season begins as the team waits for Collin McHugh, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. (3/21/2017)

Profile: Mike Fiers had a terrible 2016 by a lot of metrics that weren't "No Hitters thrown". His ERA was up dramatically from 2015, and his once high strikeout rates were well down. Fiers throws a great curveball, paired with an average fastball, but there are few in baseball that throw a curve that separates quite like Fiers does. At best, Fiers appears to be a waiver wire pick up in 2017. He will likely pitch closer to 160 innings if he has the performance to stay in the Astros rotation, but with younger arms that have more potential nipping at his heels, one has to wonder how long Fiers has to perform at below replacement level before the Astros see what they have in their younger pitchers. (Mike Sonne)

The Quick Opinion: Fiers is toeing the line for the 5th starter role with the Astros. His 2016 performance showed significant decline from 2015, with not a lot of reason to think things are getting better.
