The former No. 1 overall draft pick, Tim Beckham, had a chance to spend the 2014 season as a part of the Rays' infield rotation, collecting at bats against lefties when
shifted to right field, perhaps. But his ACL injury during the offseason just about spoiled those hopes. Despite the pressure the Rays front office must be feeling to get production out of a player selected ahead of
, Beckham's good-to-strong defense at second and ability to hit left-handers makes him a near duplicate of
, who's occupied the utility platoon man role for several seasons so far. If and when an injury or trade opens up a position in either the infield or the outfield (because Zobrist will likely slide into either opening), Beckham would have been the player on speed dial. As a 23-year-old infielder, Beckham hit a solid .276/.342/.387 in the International League (Triple-A), and he has shown some knack for stealing bases. But until he's healthy and made it onto the 25-man roster again, his fantasy value is virtually nothing. (
The Quick Opinion:
Beckham has a chance to become a full-time starter for the Rays, but the former number one draft pick will first need to supplant
as the right-handed utility man -- and recover from his offseason ACL tear. Once Beckham does make the roster, though, he might be worth stashing on the bench in some deeper leagues. Maybe look his way again near the end of 2014.
Seven years after selecting shortstop Tim Beckham with the first overall pick in the draft, the Tampa Bay Rays finally began to reap some benefit. The eight plate appearances he received in 2013 don't count -- this was the first time Beckham received regular playing time in the bigs. A 50-game suspension for testing positive for marijuana in 2012, a torn ACL in 2013, and lackluster performance in the high minors stalled Beckham's career, but he finally broke into the bigs last year, appearing in 83 games for Tampa as a utility infielder. Beckham's plate discipline problems could be very real, and his numbers, which were below-average to begin with, were likely propped up by unsustainable number of his very few fly balls leaving the yard. Beckham never hit for much power in the minors, so we shouldn't expect him to come anything close to maintaining the near-30 homer-a-year pace at which he played last year. The flashy tools that made him the number one pick of the 2008 draft have never translated to the field, and Beckham, at best, should be viewed as a utility man off the bench with speed. (
The Quick Opinion:
Once declared a bust, Beckham finally received substantial playing time in the major leagues seven years after being selected first overall in the 2008 draft by Tampa. He held his own at the plate for a utility man, but the power shown is likely a mirage, and without the power, Beckham's plate discipline issues are tough to look past. He likely doesn't have a future beyond a utility man.
