Nelson once again showed that he has absolutely nothing left to prove at the Minor League level, posting a .384 wOBA in Colorado Springs for the second straight season. He didn’t hit all that well in the majors, but a lot of that can be put on Jim Tracy, who never gave him consistent at-bats. If given regular playing time, Nelson could blossom into a poor-man’s version of 2011 Rickie Weeks -- good enough power to cover for the lack of speed and batting average. Even with Marco Scutaro now in the fold, the former first round pick (he was taken two spots ahead of Jered Weaver in the 2004 first round) could finally see that playing time at the keystone or the hot corner. Nelson will be 26 this season, so it may be his last chance to lay claim to a starting job in the majors. (Paul Swydan)
The Quick Opinion:
Nelson has talent, but has not yet been given a fair shake at the Major League level, so we don’t know whether or not it will translate. If he ends up the Rockies starter at second base, he could be a decent sleeper.
After three separate stints at Triple-A, Nelson finally got an extended look at the big league level. He needed an inflated batting average on balls in play to hit .300, but does seem to have the batted ball profile necessary to maintain a mark above the league average when it comes to batted balls. He has some pop, although his home run total will be limited by a low fly ball rate. He has shown a bit of speed in the past, but that has almost completely disappeared and a full season may bring just a mid-single digit stolen base total. As rosters stand now, he currently projects as the starting third baseman, but it would be a surprise if that lasted all season given his poor defense at the hot corner. Since he qualifies at second base, he still makes for a decent option in deeper fantasy leagues if he opens the year with a starting job. (
The Quick Opinion:
Nelson performed admirably in a half season with Colorado and now finds himself atop the depth chart at third base. He won't standout in any category, but does possess a bit of power and speed and shouldn't hurt you in batting average.
No major league club is excited about bringing Chris Nelson into the fold, so clearly you shouldn’t be either. Nelson has never done much that wasn’t batted-ball-luck related, so there’s a reason teams aren’t interested. (Zach Sanders)
A couple years ago, it looked like Nelson might have some potential as a fantasy option, hitting .301/.352/.458 in 377 plate appearances. That production ended up being a Coors Field mirage, and over the last two seasons, his weighted offense has been about 40% below league-average. The 29-year-old will spend Spring Training with the Phillies as a non-roster invitee, but he's not likely to make the team. (
The Quick Opinion:
Fun fact: Chris Nelson's middle name is Lars. How neat is that? Lars!
