Profile: Romo, currently a free agent, was effective again in 2016 despite career-low velocity. Lower velocity can probably be expected with a 33-year-old, but despite it, Romo allowed the second-lowest exit velocity on batted balls in the game last year (84.8 mph). This could be due in part to his increased slider usage (though he already threw a higher percentage of sliders than anyone else in the game) as he fired a career-high 63.5% of them. While the slider is not as excellent as it once was, it still generated whiffs on 16.9% of pitches in 2016. He also threw his sinker more than in any recent season. The pitch was excellent, with a 15.4% whiff rate and was likely successful, in part, because of how often hitters are looking for his slider. For 2017, Romo will likely make a serviceable bullpen arm for the Dodgers even if he isn’t the late game option he once was. (Joe Douglas)

The Quick Opinion: Not the closer he once was, Romo has maintained his effectiveness despite his age, diminished velocity, and decreased whiffs on his slider. He should be a reliable late-inning relief option again in 2017.
