2018 Ottoneu FGPts Rankings- 2B/SS

Wednesday we kicked off our ottoneu FanGraphs points player rankings with C/1B/3B, and today I’m back with 2B/SS. This year the rankings will include values from myself, Trey Baughn, and the default values from the FanGraphs Auction Calculator using the ottoneu FanGraphs points preset (Steamer projections). We are presenting our individual dollar values, plus the weighted average of all three rankings (2:2:1 weighting with the Auction Calc weighted less). In addition, the tables below include ottoneu eligibility (5 games started/10 games played in the prior year). Players are ranked only at their most valuable position, and the hierarchy we are using is C/SS/2B/3B/OF/1B (with 3B and OF being a coin toss in terms of replacement level, we chose to include 3B/OF eligibles at 3B).

Prior Rankings: C/1B/3B

Key:

AVG – Weighted average of Auction Calc, Vibber, and Baughn values
Avg Sal – Average salary across Ottoneu FGpts leagues
Own%– Percentage of FGPts leagues player is currently owned in (as of 2/13/18)

Observations:

  • Yes, Anthony Rizzo has 2B eligibility in ottoneu (by virtue of 10 games played, per official scorers decisions), and yes it’s ridiculous. His eligibility does slightly reduce the value of guys like Altuve that would otherwise be the cream of the keystone crop.
  • Once again the FG Auction Calculator spits out high values for players with lots of playing time and low values for players with very little. I would much rather have Willie Calhoun than Jed Lowrie for this season, despite what the Auction Calc shows.
  • In general this is a deep position with lots of options from young studs, consistent vets, and everything in between, so it should be relatively easy to find a couple options to fill your lineups at 2B and MI

  • Each of the top seven SS in our rankings is 25 years old or younger, so the position offers a remarkable collection of young studs
  • Even crazier, the top 13 SS in our rankings are all under 30 years old
  • The FG Auction Calc has very low $ values compared to Trey and myself, and has many fewer SS ranked at $1+ as well (just 17 total, while Trey and I both rank 30+ even ignoring prospects). I suspect the biggest reasons for that discrepancy are that the rankings Trey and I have are more aligned with actual ottoneu auctions, while the Auction Calc is only valuing a bare minimum number of SS to fill starting lineups without realizing how many are actually owned.

If you squint, you can see Cesar Hernandez putting up equal numbers to LeMahieu for $12 less. DJ may have a small bump in runs and average, but the gap has closed. Cesar just needs to play 150 games (which is no guarantee).
