  1. So, in a vacuum, for a keeper league, would you consider keeping a Kimbrall over, say, a Chase Utley, an older veteran with serious injury concerns?

  2. I was lucky enough to have a choice of keeping Axford, Kimbrel or both at $ values pretty close to those above ($10 and $16 to be precise). I decided to trade Kimbrel and got Elvis Andrus ($10) back. I’ve been burned on all BA/SB guys in the past but felt like it was better to fill the scarce position. Will I regret the trade overall? What about keeping Axford instead of Kimbrel?

  3. I like that trade for you. Quality shortstops are hard to find, and you got one for a reliever. A very good reliever yes, but still just a reliever. Axford doesn’t have the same kind of workload concerns, little bit more a track record as well.

  4. It depends on the right veteran, but I would keep Utley over Kimbrel. Hard to find decent production at second base.

  6. If Bailey is traded to the Reds, per the latest rumor, who steps in as closer for the A’s? I know Fuentes got the majority of SVO last year, but Balfour is the guy for 2012, right?

  7. Wrong.

If Bailey is traded it’s less clear cut. The player the A’s would like to be their closer is actually Fautino De Los Santos, who throws 96 MPH and has impressive strikeout rates pre-and-post TJ surgery. The key for him is command and control — his walk rates came down to respectable levels in 2010 but he struggled a bit in 2011.

As for Balfour, he’s just as likely as Bailey to be trade bait.

The smart play in a keeper league is De Los Santos because he was cheap to pick up in 2011 (I had him for $1).

All of this is relevant only of you play in a deeper league, as I do (12 owners A.L.-only with 17-man reserves plus 23-man rosters). In shallow mixed leagues banking on any one A’s closer at this point may carry more risk than reward.
