  1. Perez got no love as a prospect either, so this is nothing new. Most prospect mavens didn’t like him for one reason: He seldom takes a walk. However, you look at his numbers in the minors and they aren’t bad, they improved one year to the next, and he’s really really young yet. The Royals have said he’s the #1 catcher for 2012, so we know he’ll play. In what is shaping up to be a pretty good run-scoring lineup, he’s certainly worth drafting.

  2. Love Perez as a big time sleeper going forward.

  3. i love perez and used him last year, but it’s because people have catcher in their minds as “i get power here and don’t care about the avg i get unless it’s joe mauer” and as stated above he doesn’t get walks. but it’s true he just hits, and i like the yadier molina comp in terms of what to expect offensively. i’m definitely going to get him later in my draft for my 16 league team, as a backup/upside guy

  4. He’s an average only play. B James’ normally optimistic projection has him at .319 wOBA which would have him in a 3 way tie for 16th among catchers. Unless the league is pretty deep, uses two catchers, or your team is in dire need of average, I don’t see why he should be owned.

  5. I hear what you’re saying in regard to taking him over an established low AVG, mediocre-power vet like Iannetta or John Buck, but the question I really have is how he stacks up against other youngsters. I’ve done a handful of mocks so far that had at least 8 or 9 human participants. In the two catcher ones, I’ve found my second selection often between Perez and Devin Mesoraco. Seems like Mesoraco offers much more upside, but Perez has clearer path to playing time and a stable if unspectacular skillset. In single catcher leagues, I imagine both of these guys will be on my radar in real drafts when I miss on the second tier guys I’ve been able to pretty freely target so far in mocks like Wieters or one of the Monteros (I know Jesus won’t have C eligibility for a bit so in those leagues I usually take a late flier on Perez or Mesoraco anyway) and in some cases Buster Posey if he freefalls a bit.

  6. Riddle me this – where the hell is the love for Tyler Flowers? Kid’s sported a +10% walk rate last year and decent pop. How big a roadblock is A.J. Pierzeincksiskdfi?
