  1. 3rd positive: Word on the street is that the A’s scouting department knows a thing or two about player development. My estimation of Cespedes went up just a little knowing that one of the better scouting organizations w/ financial limitations that could have precluded the deal made the commitment to him.

  4. It’s not as if the A’s have had problems getting to the majors muscular power guys with strikeout problems . . . Oops.

  6. yikes. for as excellent as they are at finding pitching, it’s been a rough few prospect cycles for hitting.

  11. Considering they signed Coco Crisp to a $7M AAV (over 2 years), this contract could easily justify itself. But why add a 4-year player when the strategy the rest of Beane’s (Wolff’s) offseason plan was to punt the next 4 years?

I think Cespedes will be widely available in a trade by next offseason; the potential for him to outplay this contract is certainly there.

  12. Do Davenport’s translations properly account for the spike in power seen in Cuban baseball last year? I’m skeptical that they do, and that could really lead to overvaluing him.
