  1. I suspect conditioning is an issue for Ethier and he can’t hit lefties.

More teams are catching on to the value of having at least 2 LOOGYs in the pen. Ethier is not going to face many RHP’s from the 7’th inning on, especially with runners on base ahead of him.

  2. My guess is that it several issues.

1-Ethier might have increased exposure, not so much because other managers are throwing more lefties at him, but because injuries have left Mattingly with worse alternatives. You are already using your #4 for the 56 games Kemp missed, and past Kemp & Ethier, none of them can hit anyway.

2-And as you mentioned, he signed his contract on 6/11. I drafted him on the same premise as you did, and was only too glad to get rid of him once the monetary incentive was eliminated. .856 to 6/11, and .780. All too predictable.

Ethier had one good year, at age 27, with a 1.7 and a 2.1 WAR in the past two years, and will play like that over the remainder of his career, imho. Not nearly good enough for $100M contract at his age.

  3. Sweet, an $85 million dollar platoon bat. Nice work, Ned.

  4. He kills RHP. Can’t touch LHP. He faces LOOGYS almost exclusively in the late innings. This isn’t news.

  5. I actually traded for him later in the season, but with the expectation that he was a platoon bat. Based on the timing of my acquisition, I actually think I remember he faced far more than a normal percentage of LH starters, which means his numbers against LHP weren’t just a factor of managers using LOOGYs against him, but rather one of bad luck in terms of who they faced in the opposing rotation. I expected 70% RH starters, but ended up sitting him half the time since it was more like 50/50.

  6. Ethier actually holds his own LH starters. Indeed, he improved last year against his career and OPSs 61 points better for his career. The issue is, as mentioned, LOOGYs. Ethier has a huge problem with that sweeping motion and cross plate movement that a lot of LOOGY’s have. That’s why you see him crushing guys like Saunders, LeBlanc and Doug Davis, but getting killed by relievers.
