Letters from the Battlefield – February 25, 2020

Camp Jupiter, Florida

February 25, 2020

Dearest Mother,

I apologize for not writing sooner. I was inspired to write to you after reading the letters a former Captain, named Andrew Luck, wrote to his mother. I hope these letters find you well.  Read the rest of this entry »

Opening the Mailbag, Volume I

Welcome to the first episode of the written mailbag! I’m feeling it out, seeing what works and what doesn’t. Ideally I’m going for questions that have broad-use strategies or ask about specific players so my answers are applicable for many instead of just one. The email to reach us is sleeperpod@gmail.com. Some will be better suited for the pod episodes (I’ve done one so far, but more are coming), others for here, and others still are best just answered by me directly to you.

Let me know what you think about this format and keep in mind, it’s not set in stone to be like this. I’m always answering as many questions as I can on Twitter, and in-season I think I’ll have some set time(s) each week where I’ll rapid-fire answer questions.

From Eddy: Who is your favorite sleeper pitcher and batter heading into the 2017 offseason? How come?

I’m not purposely picking two from the same team, but I’m going with Ryon Healy and Jharel Cotton, both Oakland Athletics. I think Healy will remain my favorite throughout winter, but Cotton could be usurped as I do my deep-dive research.

The Unwritten Rules

Over the course of the last three weeks, I have explored different ethical and strategic questions posed to me via email and social media. It has been a fun series to write, but now we have reached it’s conclusion for the 2016 regular season. I hope to make this a reoccurring series next season. So, whenever I can get enough questions and/or scenarios for a full piece I will write up my answers. Some people really enjoyed this series. Others hated it and the answers I gave, but it made for interesting discussions within the comment sections. I would label that a success. Feel free to send me more questions at JustinMasonFantasy@gmail.com or on twitter @JustinMasonFWFB and when I have enough, I will do an offseason installment. Thanks for playing along! The Unwritten Rules

Many years ago I met the woman who would become my future wife while we were standing in line to get into a bar. While I had been to that bar on a few occasions before, I was only there because a friend of mine had been invited to a toga party on the following night by a coworker of his and asked them if I could come along since I was new to the area and he wanted to meet me first. As I was waiting to enter the establishment, I heard the woman in front of me talking about this party. I looked up to see the most beautiful woman standing in front of me, so I used the party as an opening.

“You’re going to a toga party?” I asked. “I’m going to a toga party too! I hear it is like a frat house. I can’t wait! It should be crazy.”

That is when I got the answer I was not expecting. Read the rest of this entry »

The Unwritten Rules

I didn’t grow up a fan of baseball. I was born and raised in Washington DC; an area that was devoid of a professional team until after I moved away. However, just like many kids, I played it growing up, but because I didn’t watch much of it growing up, I didn’t know about many of baseball’s unwritten rules until later in life. MASH Report (4/15/16)

• Sorry for the delayed report. Real life got in the way. I hope to have the season’s first PAIN report on Monday

Charlie Blackmon lands on the DL with turf toe. Not a lot of news on his injury yet. I expect more today after the Rockies have a news conference. Looking back at past turf toe injuries, a three to four-week timetable is about right.

• Well, the Pablo Sandoval’s DL situation seems like a great drama, but not much more. Sandoval basically put himself on the DL after hurting his shoulder (probably trying to tighten his belt).

Sandoval, who lost his starting job to Travis Shaw late in Spring Training, made just one start in the Red Sox’s first seven games. He is 0-for-6 with four strikeouts in seven plate appearances.

“I woke up this morning with soreness, so something happened,” Sandoval said. “We’ll see what was going on later on, when the doctor gets here. I had this injury before, in 2011, but that was swinging a bat during the game. I don’t know what happened right now.”

“To give you an exact moment when it took place, I don’t have that, to be honest,” said Red Sox manager John Farrell. “He’s been hitting a lot extra before [batting practice] and during the game and in the cage. He’s got very limited range of motion. That was revealed after he went through a battery of tests with the medical staff. He’s unavailable.”

I think his time as a Red Sox regular is done. The issue keeping a trade from happening will be how much of his contract the Red Sox will have to eat to find a taker. Truthfully, they may need to eat nearly all of it and only a get a 40-grade prospect in return. In shallow leagues, I would move on past Sandoval. In deeper leagues where he can be DL’ed, wait to see how the situation plays out and if he finds playing time on another team.
