Daily Fantasy Strategy — May 14 — For Draftstreet

It’s an exciting day in New York. Young Mets’ prospect Rafael Montero is making his major league debut. Due to the fact that it’s his debut, he has no data in the chart below. I have no scouting chops whatsoever, but I’ll do my best to give you a little introduction to Mr. Montero.

Year K% BB% ERA FIP
2012 – A 18.9% 2.8% 2.52 3.17
2012 – A+ 29.0% 5.7% 2.47 2.13
2013 – AA 27.6% 3.8% 2.43 2.00
2013 – AAA 21.5% 6.9% 3.05 3.24
2014 – AAA 24.1% 10.6% 3.67 3.96

Montero has put up quality numbers everywhere he has pitched. His numbers haven’t been quite as gawdy this season, but don’t worry too much. Las Vegas – and the PCL in general – is a terrible place to pitch.

Fangaphs’ own Marc Hulet wrote the following about Montero earlier this year:

The Scouting Report: Montero is a rare Latin prospect who has a high ceiling despite being a late bloomer and not signing until he was 20 years old. His strengths as a pitcher are his above-average command and control, which help all three of his pitches play up. He possesses a low-90s fastball, slider and changeup. He needs to stay on top of his pitches more and try to create more of a downward plane.

There you have it. Montero should be fun to watch, especially if he’s able to command his fastball well. I’m not using him today, thanks to the Yankee Stadium effect, but he could be a nice cheap play going forward.

Probables Chart

It’s not his major league debut, but Kevin Gausman will be taking the mound today for Baltimore (yay). I love Gausman, but I’m staying away from him for two reasons: he’s facing Detroit and he just recovered from pneumonia. The latter worries me from a points standpoint, because I’m not sure how much stamina he’ll have.

My love for Corey Kluber is endless, so I’m really hoping Toronto’s offense cools off a little today. Brandon Maurer isn’t scary, so hopefully the Rays can put some runs on the board early. Once again the Athetlics have a fantastic match-up. Perhaps I’m biased towards them at the moment, because a lot of their match-ups look enticing. I will forever bet against Kevin Correia, for better or worse.

The Daily Five

Red Sox stack

Mike Napoli – $6,876
Xander Bogaerts – $3,610
David Ortiz – $9,555

Bogaerts hasn’t done much lately, but his low cost offsets Papi’s somewhat prohibitive price tag.

Troy Tulowitzki – $10,906

Bogaerts’ cheap price, also gives us money to play with. Enter Tulo. Tulowitzki crushes everything, but he really crushes lefties.

Brandon McCarthy – $15,098

This might backfire, but I’m betting on peripherals today. McCarthy has been extremely unlucky with the long ball so far. The ball carries in Chase Field, but the Nationals’ offense has struggled a little out of the gate, and they’re middle of the road versus right handed pitching. *Fingers crossed*

As always thanks for these.

I believe the Yanks – Mets series moves to Citi Field today so Mr Montero has a little more room to breath.
