I still don’t know how you touch Volquez in fantasy. I know it was mentioned in one sentence, but I’m just not sure you can dismiss his control problems. (over 5 BBs / 9 inn in 2010 & 2011) This guy isn’t missing the strike zone because he’s afraid to give up HRs. He’s missing the zone because he never had much control, and hasn’t even regained what little he had after TJ surgery.

Personally, I’d rather take a late flyer on someone like Kevin Slowey staying healthy and bouncing back.

IMO, the main hope for Volquez rebounding in SD is if the Padres pitching coach's approach works better than the Reds pitching coach's. Dan Wade wrote the following here 2 days ago concerning Volquez's potential improvement in PETCO: "Part of me thinks that the extra space will help Volquez drop his rather high 21 percent HR/FB from 2011, but looking over the home runs he allowed, I’m less than encouraged. Near as I can tell, all but one of the home runs Volquez allowed at home last year would have still been home runs had they been hit at PETCO."

Another thing that you could have pointed out is the fact that he was healthy enough to make 33 starts last year. A full compliment of starts cobbled together from Volquez’s and Cory Luebke’s home turns could like ace-level production. That might mean you have to use 2 roster spots for the number of innings you get from one starter you use every turn, however, I’d feel comfortable starting Luebke most of the time outside of PETCO. Love these kinds of articles. Thanks.
