A .362 BABIP would have ranked sixth in the majors last year. I refuse to believe that is not abnormally high for any rookie, much less a guy who hit .259 for the season.

And we also have the question of playing time. Yes, the Rockies are likely to fit him in somewhere or make a trade, but I'd feel better if he was playing his natural position rather than trying to play 2B or the OF.

PUA:

Stewart's LD% in the minors in 08 was 16.8%. In the previous three years it was 15.1%, 14.2%, and 10.6%, respectively.

His BABIPs in the minors have been: .306, .360, .326, .334.

Check out minorleaguesplits.com, it's an excellent resource.

Dude... Pete...

"yes, he hit line drives on 25% of his balls in play, suggesting that his BABIP was not abnormally high, but that line-drive percentage was well out of line with line-drive percentages that he had put up throughout his career, and there’s no reason to think that it (or the high BABIP) will continue next season."

If you are suggesting that his 25% LD doesn't match up with his 19% LD from 49 plate appearances in 2007, don't you think that's a poor comparison?

Until we are able to look at batted ball info for minor leaguers, I would say Stewart's 25% LD is much closer, if not right in line with the norm. 49 PAs in 2007 can be thrown out the window.

In other words, a .362 BABIP for Stewart is not abnormally high.
