I have trouble justifying a draft pick for Perez. The K's are sweet and the Cardinals look like a contending team, so a good amount of saves are likely, but the walks are pretty bad and can potentially turn him from an awesome closer to a 2006 Jose Valverde type. Plus there will be a lot of pressure on him if he struggles with both Ryan Franklin and especially Jason Motte waiting for chances. Tough call here, I think I'll use a pick elsewhere, unless he falls real late in a draft.

Hans,

I'm really glad you asked that! You'll be seeing another "Cards Closer Candidate" article tomorrow on Jason Motte. I think he's very interesting in his own right.

Good article David. What are the odds that Jason Motte takes over before the year is out? That kid's got pretty decent control and his 97mph fastball / 88 mph slider combo is all sorts of nasty.
