14.8 K/9, 4.2 K/BB in 66 IPs at AAA. Had a 3.24 ERA and only gave up 64 hits despite a gaudy .426 BABIP! His FIP was 2.29. Even showed he could get MLB hitters out for a short spell last season and given his spring success so far he could be a real gem.

I am not going to annoint him just yet, but this guy could be the best closer (peripherals, maybe not save totals) in the NL this season.

Good points Sam and Rick.

Just a thought. I know TLR led the charge with the 9th inning specialists (see Echersley). But if there was ever a manger to start a season with the dreaded 'closer by commitee' wouldnt it be LaRussa? This guy is king of making the bull pen switch, playing the match ups, using as many releivers as he dang well pleases., etc etc

Very well written analysis. The only point I would make is that LaRussa has made it clear that he prefers experience to raw stuff. I think that gives Perez a big advantage going into the season because he was in STL nearly all of 2008 while Motte was just there in September. Perez also got a chance to close and went a respectable 7 of 9 in those opps, which was the best percentage on the team last year. I think that experience gives Perez a big leg up. Based on LaRussa's history and comments, I really can't see him giving the closer job to a rookie to start the season, so I see Perez getting the nod, but if he falters and the organization feels Carpenter should be starting, then Motte may get a chance. However, in all likelihood that will only happen in the second half (with more experience), as I think even Franklin will get a shot first.
