The power drop seems a little misleading….his ISO was only .008 lower in 2009 than in 2008. The major difference in HR numbers seems to have come from the 200 or so at bat difference from 08 to 09….

Great piece, Eno. At one time, several years ago, it appeared that Young could develop into a Carlos Beltran type of player, but, as you point out, Mike Cameron feels like a much better comp now. It is scary to see, though, that he has a lot of work to do to “become” Cameron. So much for highly-touted prospects, eh?

Hopefully, he won’t have to change much. If we use Cameron as the model, he “only” needs to add about 2-3% to his in-zone swing percentage in order to reach Cameron’s level of production (minus the defensive question). That sort of thing could come from asking him to be more aggressive in the zone, something I’m sure a good hitting coach would suggest.

Living in AZ, it is frustrating to watch this waste of natural ability…Young takes strikes and swings at balls, doesn’t have any plate discipline and never goes the other way with a pitch. Guys like this seldom change…especially if they have HR power.

Well, if he ever comes remotely close to 30HR-25SB again, his bat will easily play in a corner spot and his defense won’t be a worry. He’s not a butcher in CF regardless, but the bat is the worry. Please make more contact Chris, please.
