Joey Votto got drafted out of high school and didn’t make it to the majors until he was almost 24. Is he a bust?

Julio Borbon went to college and didn’t make the majors until he was 23. Is he a bust?

Jeff Kent went to college and didn’t make it to the majors until he was 24. Was he a bust?

Ike Davis will turn 23 in about six weeks, and will probably be playing in the majors this season. Is he a bust?

Most of the guys who play in the minor leagues don’t make the majors, regardless of whether they come straight out of high school or go to college first. Should we just call all of them “overrated trading chips?”

Most of these college guys have been busts…22 in AA shoudl be tearing it up if he was a serious major leaguer. Sounds like another overrated trading chip to me. Heck Darryl was hitting them out of shea at 22.

Ike was a rightfielder at Arizona State and then a first baseman his junior year after Brett Wallace was shifted to third base. He was used as a starting pitcher his freshman year, barely pitched as a sophomore and then used a little bit in relief as a junior. He was primarily a hitter though. When he did throw, he was capable of touching the mid-90s on the radar gun. Not too shabby for a left-hander.

Also, Ike Davis was a reliever in college. He can throw in the high 80′s, and is the son of former major league pitcher Ron Davis. The Mets may try him at a corner outfield spot.

If he stays at first, imagine this potential future relay…Fraceour to Davis to home plate…..woah

interesting note about adam rubin. in the weeks leading up to omar’s meltdown, people had noticed rubin’s tone changing regarding the mets and the minor league system. he was doing a lot of cherry picking and piling on when it seemed as though he should’ve known better. found it interesting considering what later happened.
