Thanks a lot for the Rasmus writeup, David!

By 2012 or so, Rasmus should be one of the elite HR hitters in baseball; I'd expect 35-40 per year from his mid-20's to early 30's. Maybe 40+ per year in his prime.

Sound excessively optimistic, maybe even a little outrageous? Well, not only did he mash 29 HR's in a 5-month AA season when he was just 20 years old (an extremely positive marker, of course), Rasmus crushed several MLB bombs this year.

2009 N.L. leaders in avg. HR distance:

1) Mark Reynolds 415.7 feet
2) Colby Rasmus 411.4
3) Albert Pujols 411.0
4) Ryan Howard 409.8

That's some nice company, no?

i think his lack of SB success has a lot to do with tony la russa's tight rein on the rookie.

he had a tough campaign this year: he lost a lot of weight due to a stomach ailment, injured his heel mid-season, and (until the end of the season) was competing with sentimental favorite rick ankiel for time in center, even though he had an overwhelming defensive edge on ankiel, and a pretty clear offensive edge, too.

even if he were just a singles-slapper, he'd be an okay option in CF because of his defense, but i hope he will improve his plate discipline in 2010 and get the on-base percentage he needs to boost his value. with a 150-start season, he'll put up some great offensive numbers. i see him as a 25-HR a year player.

Nice write-up. 80+ success rate or not, I wouldn't expect many SB from Rasmus if he continues to hit 2nd in front of Pujols.
