I don’t think that’s championing results-based analysis; it’s more of a reality-based analysis.

The reality is that unless/until Rodney starts blowing saves or losing games (i.e., starts not doing what the team perceives as “his job,”), it is very unlikely that he is removed from the closer’s role.

Can you find another primary closer in the past two years that has lost his job under those terms? 100% save rate, lost job?

Perhaps because only Fangraphs looks at peripheral stats that are better indicators (and predictors) of performance and ignores chimerical stats like save percentage.

if he gets a save then he has done his job, they won the game. Im sure Zumaya could be the closer, for about a week.

Joel Zumaya’s numbers aren’t any better. He just happens to throw harder.

Still, the 4.11 ERA and 1.30 WHIP puts him in danger b/c Zumaya throws >100 on most pitches. Plus his K/BB is just 1.75. The saves metric is overrating Rodney drastically
