Yes Hairston will probably cost a little more than Michaels, but Hairston also has 710 at-bats of a .237/.296/.418 slash line against righties. There's a reason it took him until he was 29 to get a regular gig, and the Pads have Gwynn Jr coming up behind him. He just seems attainable to me, maybe for a single-A arm kind of deal.

Why do you think that Hairston would come cheap?

That's a good point, but the farm system is pretty much barren. He'll look foolish if he spends what little farm he has on an Aubrey Huff or Nick Johnson and then Delgado comes back and he has a really expensive bench player that cost him a real prospect.

Mark DeRosa is the elephant in the room. He has great numbers versus lefties, but has never played center field. He could supplant Luis Castillo, but then would make Omar Minaya admit one of his bigger mistakes.

He's sort of stuck between a rock and a hard place. On the radio here, he's claiming that they are doing fine, he doesn't want to be taken to the cleaners for mediocre players, and that he's inclined to wait for his injured stars. We'll see if he can stick to the script or not.

You're right; Michaels does have fine splits against lefties. All I'm inferring is that the Mets will be after larger fish than finding a platoon partner for Jeremy Reed. Omar Minaya is holding on for dear life this year.

"Targeting" is your word. Jason Michaels has a good career platoon split against lefties and can play center field - two things the Mets need. It'd probably cost the Mets a couple balls and bats, so it could be more of a 'why not' thing rather than a 'targeted' solution.

Regarding finding a platoon partner for Jeremy Reed, I doubt strongly the Mets are targeting Jason Michaels.
