Update:

Big bad vlad is back with something to prove. He'll get his 500 HR, 3000 hits and 2000 RBI's. Oh and yes, he did it without steroids

During the course of his career, Guerrero has crushed pitches of all types. It’s really quite remarkable: fastballs (+1.11 runs/100 pitches), sliders (+1.87), cutters (+1.95), curves (+2.78), changeups (+1.95), splitters (+2.93). Heck, he’s even knocked around the knuckleball (+4.85).

WOW. That's remarkable alright. If the data were available, I wonder how many hitters would be almost +2 on all non-fastballs? Sort of surprises me the fastball is his lowest career mark of all the pitch types.

Few people talked about his decline compared to David Ortiz(who still shows some power), and other aging hitters like Magglio Ordonez. Ordonez actually had a better year overall. He had 51 walks compared to only 65 k's. And hit .310, was better in clutch situations, and his OBP was far better; .376 to .334.

Vlad has always been a free swinger, but had respectable walk to strikeout ratios. Striking out 56 times while only getting 16 free passes is pretty bad.

Sure Ordonez is going to make an absurd amount of money, but I think will he's going to have a better year in 2010. In the two biggest games of Detroit's season, he went 6 for 9 with 2 homeruns and 3 RBI. And August 1st, he was hitting .258... after that point he batted .401.

Vlad was once a lock to become the next 500(even 600) homerun guy while getting 3000 hits. At this pace he'll barely get to 500, and being almost 35, he has to play at least 5 more seasons decline and all to reach the magic number of hits.

Have to say I agreed with your analysis. Great as Vlad The Impaler has been in his career, his playing days as an everyday player-except for the position of DH-are gone. I consider him an HOF. Not too many right handed hitters with .320, the HRs, RBI, and before he hurt his back, the base stealing numbers. What might have been had Vlad played his early career on natural surface, instead of the concrete in Montreal. Hope he gets a 2-3 yr deal as DH. 5 million with incentives appears appropriate.
