I think you can safely forget about Mike Rivera. The Brewers have no need for him and shouldn’t play him at all this year if they can help it. It’s a good thing he didn’t preclude the Brewers from bringing in Zaun.

Kottaras, on the other hand, is intriguing. Many people have written him off as a prospect, but he shows enough promise as a lefty option that he should get PA this year in MIL.

Zaun + Kottaras is a perfectly reasonable (and cheap) catching duo until the youngsters are ready to own the position.

On the off chance Kottaras develops into a legit MLB player (he only has 112 PA in the majors), the youngsters can be moved into different roles (Salome in particular) or traded.

It doesn’t. The Rays get a supplemental pick from Zaun. First-round picks are only swapped if the free agent is a type-A.

Lucroy looks like the offspring of Gregg Zaun and Jamie Moyer, so don’t be surprised if Moyer signs with the Brewers in the near future.
