This seems pretty hyperbolic to me. Sure, he looked like he *might* be toast, but there were plenty of people who were pretty optimistic that he’d bounce back after just one bad year. It’s not like he was crap in ’09 (.386 wOBA), and in ’08 he was worth almost 8 WAR (.419 wOBA). I doubt anyone expected him to be as good as he was, but given his career history, “out of nowhere” seems extreme, and it wasn’t unreasonable to think he’d get back to ~.380 wOBA (if not the ~.400 he put up).

I’d think a better comp for this would be Adam Dunn- one bad year after a long career of success. Sure, the age is off, but most of the guys you’ve listed have been in a tailspin a lot longer then Berkman was.

Say what you like, but Carlos Lee, Vladdy (as much as I love him), and Soriano have never been accused of that. I’m with you on Hafner and Drew, though. I guess I’ll throw Werth and Bay out there too. They aren’t 35 yet, but Bay looks as washed up as Berkman did for sure.
