Profile: Seth Maness was once Mike Matheny's go-to player when he needed a double play, due to his ground ball prowess. While that likely wasn't a sound strategy, it was still a role Maness had carved out for himself over the past few seasons. Maness has never struck a lot of guys out, but reached a new low last season, striking out just one batter every other inning. No matter how many ground balls you get, that is pretty unusable for a reliever in today's game. Fortunately, or unfortunately, there was a reason for Maness' issues. He had arm troubles. In a somewhat interesting and perhaps groundbreaking surgery, Maness had a procedure that is similar to Tommy John, but still has a more scientific name that I can't be bothered to look up.. The surgery, an alternative to Tommy John, only for some patients depending on where the tear in the ligament is, is said to cut recovery time in half. Instead of missing all season, he plans to be ready for spring training. He wasn't offered a contract by the Cardinals and signed a minor league deal with the Royals. He still won't get a lot of strikeouts and is worth following for fantasy purposes, if only to find out if this surgery will be a success. (Craig Edwards)

The Quick Opinion: Seth Maness just had potentially groundbreaking surgery as an alternative to Tommy John. He's worth following for that reason, but probably only for that reason.
