RotoWire News: Montero is impressing Cubs manager Joe Maddon this spring, but that doesn't mean he's going to get a bigger role once the regular season starts, the Chicago Sun-TImes reports. (3/14/2017)

Profile: A typically reliable offensive catcher in many respects, Miguel Montero saw his offensive woes cause his starts behind the plate to dwindle. His 284 plate appearances was his lowest total since 2008. Interestingly enough, he actually experienced about a six percent increase in his contact rate, while driving his walk rate up to 13.4%, the highest mark of his career. Montero also cut down on his strikeouts, with his 20.4% K-rate representing about a five percent decrease from the previous season. Where the fault in his offensive game lied was in the type of contact that he was making. He made hard contact at the lowest rate of his career, while also maintaining a ground ball rate of exactly 50.0%. That all culminated in a paltry .249 batting average on balls in play. At this point in his career, it's unlikely that he'll recover the pop that we've seen in the past, but that declining Hard% and high ground ball rate are concerning. He'll likely open the season as the backup to Willson Contreras in Chicago. The good news for Montero is that given Contreras' versatility, he may see some outfield time, which could lead to more starts than you usually get from a backup catcher. Even so, it's difficult to rationalize a roster spot for him with that declining production in mind. (Randy Holt)

The Quick Opinion: Miguel Montero saw his playing time dwindle and was relegated to a backup role in a season in which he hit just .216 and struggled to get the ball in the air. With Willson Contreras establishing himself, it'll be difficult for Montero to make a regular impact at the plate in 2017.
