Profile: De Aza signed with the Mets to take the long side of a center field platoon with Juan Lagares, but this signing and the associated expectations appeared premature after the team signed Yoenis Cespedes and named him the everyday center fielder. The Mets outfield was a logjam from the outset, and for the first few months of the season De Aza had only sporadic playing time. As a result his play suffered dramatically. When given more consistent playing time in the middle of the season his performance picked up a little, and he had a great month of July. The season as a whole was almost entirely lost for him, between infrequent playing time and poor performances when he was given a chance, De Aza was a bust for the Mets and has seen his free agent stock fall accordingly. His defense was perfectly adequate in every role he was given throughout the season, and his physical abilities don’t seem diminished. If he is granted a true platoon role in 2017, with consistent and predictable playing time, I imagine he could go back to his career average production, but he was never given that opportunity with the Mets. The Quick Opinion: De Aza will struggle to find playing time to reestablish his major league value in 2017. If given playing time, he may go back to being an adequate 4th outfielder.
